I just read what people write on all the forums. You should do too. In any case, at some point I'll know exactly the matter of the fact. I have a friend who knows Jean Nouvel, and I hope at some point I can ask (or have my friend ask) Jean Nouvel why the height was limited to ca. 300 meters. But let's not rush things.

I want to open my eyes, but it's hard when what you see is the world's worst skyscraper.
I don't mind had this been a lowrise, but in this case, it is not, it's a boring weird tower trying to be what it can never be, a real signal, and that's the problem.
LD might have a lot of boxy towers, and that's what I love, but it doesn't have THE big strong and linear dick, somehow it doesn't have the one and only tower to really push and pull everything around it, instead they will put this piece of molten poo, which by definition will never be capable of doing so.
And it's a shame because they've just wasted the best spot in LD, right next to both others landmarks, the Arche and the CNIT. Talk about this tower being a waste of money, and Mayne being a waste of talent

i think you are very very optimistic about that 400 m tower...but you'd rather come back to reality

France do not care about building such a tower...and politics in france have better things to think about than building a 400 m tower...i don't think it will be different in 5 or 10 years from now

There is a very minority of people who have that dream...but then there is all the politics, nimby, lobbys of all kinds, and economics that will make that dream unrealistic !!

come down on earth Brisavoine, you are in a BIG dream.

then regarding the current projects in la defense and politics, you can be sure than, even if France is not a soviet country as you state, if socialists comme to power, la defense (where all those capitalistic big companies are) will certainly NOT be their priority.

but you can still dream of your 400 m tower...

No tower of 400 meters will be in project in La d?fense untill 2013. Afterwards, no one knows, but untill 2013, none are planned.

Time will tell Kony. I know the logics of this country very well, that's all.

Morphosis website has just been updated with Tour Phare:

http://www.morphosis.net/morph.html

We learn that the tower is at 'schematic Design' phase...Will the tower slightly change?

I agree, I love the front but am not that fond of the back, but maybe it would look better on proper renders...

Sorry to say that... When seeing the first renders of tour signal, i liked it very much. I liked its organic structure, its strange curves : it was quite elegant and unique. But the back of the tower is literally shocking me !!! What the hell is that ! I totally agree with JGG : the tower seems to have been blasted or sliced. It looks damaged...

Before, I was seeing it as as a strange but elegant creature. Now i would say it's more like a mutant or an android tower...

Really shocking !!

Well what is interesting is that this tower leaves nobody indifferent. As much as I like the front (particularly the entrance but also the hair - if they are hiding turbines that will produce 40% of its energy consumption then this is really innovative) but the back looks as if it comes straigh out of a nightmare. It just gives me a bad feeling. OK, at least it evokes emotions but I would be glad if it could be changed to have some of the elegance of the front. The risk of having a tower that is "over the top" or "too crazy" in its design is that it will age quite badly. Now I can only assume that many people feel the same way about it and that good French taste will prevail over an American architect and that the back gets a bit of a make-over. How does this work to get planning permission in LD? Can the planners not demand such change?

The planner is EPAD (La Défense Authority). They took part in the selection process, and their director, Bernard Bled, likes the tower, so...

Those who issue building permits are people in the local prefecture, but (knowledgeable people correct me if I'm wrong) they issue these based on legal and technical considerations, not based on artistic considerations.

At this point, major changes could come only if there's a major public uproar, then politicians would get involved. I don't see this happening however. It's in La Défense, elite "bo-bo" Parisians don't care. If this tower was built in the City of Paris proper, then there would surely be an uproar and a major controversy about its design. But in La Défense I don't see this happening.

Just a question out of curiosity to all those finding the tower "ugly". What is your opinion of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao ?

^ I love the Bilbao Guggenheim though not from that angle. However I think this tower is hideous. Compare it to beautiful designs such as Shanghai World Financial Center, The Sail in Singapore, Burj Dubai, or London Bridge Tower. All of these designs are elegant, beautiful, and inspiring. By contrast this looks like a revolting blob of gloop. It's overweight, inelegant, and awkward and has none of the "soar" of all the best scraper designs.

c'est pas la peine de discuter Métro, ils la trouvent moche, tant pis. S'il y a du mauvais esprit quand bien même, les gouts ne se discutent pas, ils s'éduquent mais ne se discutent pas...

I'm pretty sure the design will change eventually.
