The action in the sky is set to occur on Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26--weather permitting, of course.

Photos of the spire supplied by the building's architects and engineers, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill of Chicago, show tapering, three-legged steel sections waiting to be trucked to Chicago. Once connected atop the hotel-condo tower and clad in painted fiberglass, they will reach at least 200 feet above its roofline and bring its total height to more than 1,360 feet.

That should make the Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago, as the building is formally known, the second-tallest building in America, about 90 feet shorter than Sears Tower, an office building. Always fond of associating himself with superlatives, Trump is billing his skyscraper as "the Tallest Residential Building in North America."

The New York developer and reality TV star initially did not want a spire atop the skyscraper, but relented in 2004 when Mayor Richard M. Daley insisted on the decorative feature in a closed-door meeting in Daley's 5th floor City Hall office. Said a Chicago Tribune headline: "Daley to Trump: 'You're spired!'"

Wednesday's "topping-off" ceremony, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. on the tower's 16th floor, is a public relations event that will mark the completion of the tower's concrete superstructure, an event which occurred last month. In addition to Trump, his grown children and fellow bold-face names--Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric--are expected to attend. The spire's height, according to Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is 227 feet, eight inches.

Located at 401 N. Wabash Ave., on the former site of the squat Chicago Sun-Times building, the tower is set to be completed next year.

Its chief designer, Adrian Smith, has left Skidmore and opened his own Chicago architectural firm. While at Skidmore, Smith also designed an even taller mixed-use skyscraper, the Burj Dubai, now under construction in the United Arab Emirates. Its height is expected to reach a mind-boggling 2,600 feet--a level that, for now at least, out-Trumps even Trump.

Brian Steele, a spokesman for the City of Chicago's Department of Transportation, said he could not specify street closures because the Trump Organization and its contractor, Bovis, have not yet applied for a permit for the spire installation.

So how tall is this tower without the spire?

Spire Installation Date Has changed

Trump Tower: Ready to get spired

Donald Trump is in Chicago Wednesday for the ceremonial "topping off" of his 92-story riverfront skyscraper, but for my money, the real drama will come in November when a helicopter lifts the tower's ornamental spire into place.

The action in the sky is set to occur on Saturday, Nov. 1, and Sunday, Nov. 2, according to Andrew Weiss, executive vice president of The Trump Organization. Earlier, the tower's architects, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill of Chicago, put the dates at Oct. 25 and Oct. 26. Bad weather or bureaucratic hurdles could force another postponement. On Tuesday, city officials said, The Trump Organization and its contractor had yet to apply for a permit.

Photos of the spire supplied by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill show tapering, three-legged steel sections waiting to be trucked to Chicago. Once connected atop the hotel-condo tower, they will reach at least 200 feet above its roofline and bring its total height to more than 1,360 feet.

That will make the Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago, as the building is formally known, the second-tallest building in America, about 90 feet shorter than Sears Tower, an office building.

Wednesday's "topping-off" ceremony, scheduled for 3 p.m. on the tower's 16th floor, is a public relations event that will mark the completion of the tower's concrete superstructure. In addition to Trump, his grown children and fellow bold-face names--Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric--are expected to attend. The spire's height, according to Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is 227 feet, eight inches.

The spire will be clad in painted fiberglass, a material that was chosen, according to The Trump Organization, because it reduces long-term maintenance costs and is unlikely to rust or suffer from ice buildup.

The material also opens to the door to the spire being used for communications, though it is unclear whether it would ever house lucrative broadcast antennas like those atop Sears Tower and the John Hancock Center.

"Communications uses are possible without external antennas, as the fiberglass is transparent to radio waves and equipment can be hidden in the interior of the spire," Weiss said in an email.

He explained that helicopters would lift most sections of the spire into place with the cladding already attached.

"Some sections of the cladding will have to be left off to provide access to the connections at the attachment points," he said. "The mssing portions of the cladding will be completed by hand without the need for helicopters, after the structure is set, over the next several days."

Its height is expected to reach a mind-boggling 2,600 feet.

Brian Steele, a spokesman for the City of Chicago's Department of Transportation, said Tuesday he could not specify street closures associated with the spire's installation because the Trump Organization and its contractor, Bovis, have not yet applied for a permit.

In an email sent Wednesday, Weiss characterized the Nov. 1-2 weekend as "the latest date, based upon City permitting requirements."

This thing is just screaming for an outdoor observation deck. I know it's too late now but good lord if he had put an express elevator in that goes to the top floor it would have been perfect. I mean look at it! The central location is perfect.

Describing this building as being done well might be a stretch... more like well done. But in relation to existing Trump structures, this is the most successful.

I am still not feeling this building yet, I guess that might be caused by the nasty Trump-vibes still stirring around it… the way he has mis-treated so many people and local business, the way he dismisses any other on-going project in Chicago as “will not be completed”, and in his general a$$hole New York-ness.

rant complete
