A pair from Oak Park

If you look closely you can see the Hancock between the light poles on the left, and Sears hiding in the trees on the right.

Trump spire installation canceled again because of high winds

Donald Trump is having no luck with the winds of the Windy City.

With gusts of up to 40 m.p.h. on Sunday morning, the helicopter installation of the spire atop the 92-story Trump Tower in Chicago was canceled for the second time in as many days. The timing of another try is uncertain, leaving skyline watchers in suspense over the final aesthetic flourish for the skyscraper, the tallest in America since the 1974 completion of Sears Tower.

"The ironworkers made the call," said a Chicago police officer standing at East Wacker Drive and Wabash Avenue, across the Chicago River from the light-blue, glass-faced hotel and condominium skyscraper.

The winds, blowing out of the south on an unusually mild day, would have made it difficult for the ironworkers to align steel sections of the spire dangling from the helicopter and bolt them into place more than 1,100 feet above the ground.

As a result, with an eye toward costs as well as safety, the installation was called off before it could even begin. "As soon as he [the helicopter pilot] gets in the air, it's $5,000 an hour," said Tim Snyder, a construction manager for The Trump Organization.

Another attempt on Monday is out of the question. The city permit for the installation was for two days only, and the presence of hundreds of cars and pedestrians in the area around the skyscraper on a weekday would create a safety hazard.

As a result, the installation may have to wait until next year--unless city officials quickly issue another permit for next weekend. That might happen, Snyder said, because the helicopter for the installation is scheduled to remain at Midway Airport through next Sunday morning. But other factors, including harsh winter weather, could push the installation into 2009.

When the builders last spoke with the city's Special Events department, Snyder explained, city officials "said this was the only remaining weekend available this year because of a couple of things: Home Bears games and the fact that during the next two weekends, [there will be] increased traffic because of holiday shopping and tourism."

Another complicating issue: The availability of a pilot to operate the helicopter.

"The pilots that do this stuff, they don't travel with the machines," Snyder said. After the cancellation on Sunday morning, "the pilot [for the installation] was at Midway and he was all prepared to jump on the next flight out because he's got someplace he's got to be tomorrow."

It all means continuing uncertainty over whether the spire will add to--or detract from--Chicago's renowned skyline and whether Mayor Richard M. Daley was right in 2004 when, during a private meeting in City Hall, he ordered Trump to put the decorative flourish atop the previously flat-topped tower ("Daley to Trump: You're Spired!" the Tribune headline read).

The hotel and condominium skyscraper was designed by Chicago architect Adrian Smith while he was at the firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill of Chicago. Smith has since left Skidmore to form his own firm. At 1,361 feet, including the spire, the Trump Tower will be Chicago's second building--and the nation's second tallest--after the 1,451-foot Sears Tower.

But for that to happen, Chicago's howling winds need to die down.

There is no way that the spire will be installed this month. Right now we have 50 mph winds and temps hovering just above zero. A fitting problem for Trump, even mother nature knows that he's an a$$.

BTW, I visited some friends that just moved onto the 49th floor with beautiful east views over the river. BREATHTAKING IN EVERY SENSE!

Other things I noticed: Snaidero kitchens with sub-zero fridge & miele appliances, Kohler fixtures??, knotty hardwood flooring??, operable window sashes allowing fresh air. Not really impressed with the construction and the quality of mayterials that Trump has been bragging about. There has been a lot of value engineering.

Trump Tower's restaurant, Sixteen, was very well done as far as finishes and some design elements. We did not want dinner but only some appys and some drinks. The only problem - there is NO view outside from the bar or lounge and tables are reserved well in advance. We viewed the half-filled dining area and it appeared five-star, but felt extremely sterile at the same time. We passed on the whole thing opting to go elsewhere.
