Trump Tower helicopter operation a "go" for Saturday; chopper will try to install steel support for skyscraper's spire
A helicopter will try Saturday to install the steel undergirding for the spire atop Donald Trump's Chicago skyscraper, the tallest building in America since the completion of Sears Tower.

The attempt will follow several postponements and one failed try last month, which was foiled by high winds. It is expected to begin at about 10 a.m. at the tower, located in the 400 block of North Wabash Avenue. Several sections of the spire still must be put into place.

The current forecast for Saturday calls for cloudy skies, with a 20 percent chance of rain in the afternoon. Winds are expected to be out of the east, at 10 to 20 m.p.h., with gusts of up to 30 m.p.h. late in the afternoon

Tim Snyder, a construction manager for The Trump Organization, said in a telephone interview on Friday night that those conditions are expected to be manageable, in part because the builders have come with a new strategy for installing the spire.

The helicopter will only try to lift the three-legged steel sections of the spire into place, Snyder said. Construction workers removed the spire's fiberglass covering after the aborted attempt in December.

Taking off the fiberglass should allow the wind to blow through the trusswork, making it easier for ironworkers on the roof of the skyscraper to align the steel sections of the spire. With the fiberglass on, the sections blew like a sail in the wind.

The fiberglass will have to be re-attached to the trusswork after the operation. That part of the job could take up to two weeks, Snyder said.

The 92-story Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago, as the skyscraper is formally known, will rise to a height of 1,361 feet, 90 feet shorter than Sears Tower, which was finished in 1974. The hotel and condominium tower is expected to be completed in late spring or early summer.

The city's permit for the helicopter installation extends through Sunday, in case extra time is required for the installation.

In an email, Snyder wrote that the helicopter would start at about 8 a.m. with a small job at the nearby Swissotel along East Wacker Drive. That project is scheduled to take about an hour.

"The helicopter will then refuel and return to Trump around 10AM. While refueling is taking place, the City will move their command post and set up the perimeter around Trump," Snyder wrote.

From some angles, a spire isn't necessary. From others, it is.

Maybe it's a tradition to put spires on it: look at the John Hancock Center and the Sears Tower.

I hope some of us can film or take pictures while the helicopter places the steel frame in place.

You can see a great live view of the skyline here - Trump is the 3rd (significant) building from the right - unfortunately there's not anyone there to zoom in the camera, or switch to the much better and closer view from our office building (I work at Fox) - they don't get in until 2pm - but you can see a little bit here - better than nothing!
