Yes, they are going to still add to the spire. Right now, it's just the base of the spire that is up. They still have to add the 'cladding' or 'shell', for lack of a better term. I'm excited to see it when it doesn't have the construction elevator and the spire is complete!

Wow.the real Trump Tower looks a lot better than the render. can't wait until the lifts are taken off the sides, and the cladding is put on the spire.

Finishing the Trump Tower spire: How the builders plan to do it
Now that the underlying steel structure for the Trump Tower spire is finally in place, how--and when--is the fiberglass covering for the spire going to be installed?

Here are answers I received yesterday from Tim Snyder, construction manager for The Trump Organization:

"The fiberglass will be attached to the spire sections during the next two weeks, weather permitting. The erector, Installation Services, will use small winches to lift the fiberglass panels from the roof, position them, and bolt them into place from inside the spire structure. Ironworkers were on the spire all day today [Monday] detailing it and preparing for this process which should start before the end of the week as long as the weather holds. The weather folks are calling for snow mid-week."

Finally the (height cheater), I mean, SPIRE is attached.

This is one beautiful looking building.
Proportion is good, cladding is perfect.

Too bad Mr. Trump didn't build it higher...

Eh, it's not like it's cheating to break any records or anything, so who cares?

No, but they can advertise this as the third tallest in Chicago or whatever. This building is NOT 1362 feet high. It just isn't. the building is 1100 and something high with an antenna on top.

The motivation for "cheating" isn't important, the fact that some council on something somewhere recognizes these things in the total building height is ridiculous.

It's like saying that the Freedom Tower in NYC will be 1,776 ft high. Ridiculous!

This is all JMHO of course but to call these things height cheaters is the most accurate description I have ever heard. Look at that render on the top of this page. To call the building on the left taller than the one on the right is just silly.

I actally like this spire. I only wish it was thicker; something similar to the Antennas that Sears Tower has on top.

I might have said this already when other people had disagreements about the spire here, but I think that the spire completes the upward movement of the tower. As you follow the building up, it gets smaller and smaller because of the setbacks. If we were to not have the spire, the design would look stunted because it was left so thick at the top, so I am glad that it is there to complete the design language. The Council that decided that a spire should count as part of the height measurement realized that the spire can be a vital part of the architectural language of the building, and is indeed part of the tower, structurally, and design-wise, so counting it was necessary.

I would agree with you where the Empire State Building, or Chrysler, or Petronus are concerned. Those are obviously architectural components of the building. I cannot see that with this building or with Freedom Tower. These are antennae, nothing more.

"Height cheaters" is a perfect description.

Cheers

Many people do favour the roof height rather than the structural height with many obvious reasons. They should protest or something, or else this thing will never end...

I love the spire on this tower, it fits it perfectly, and fits with the other towers of chicago. Can't wait to see it finished and with the lighting at night.
