Yes, and most of the exhausts are made out of water particles that wont be visible in normal temperature conditions but become visible with low temperatures. When it's cold and you can see your breath, is it because you are burning coal? Same thing when we talk about con-trails, do you think that is the pollution of the airplane? No, because the polluting particles burnt by the plane are invisible (most of them) while the trail is formed mostly by water particles that condense at a higher altitude (where temperatures are below 0 F ). Similar procedure, different example.
In short, if you want to sound smart and talk about pollution in a picture, look for those with gray haze low on the surface (with a layer of around max 100 m), and pray that it isn't mostly humidity....

p.s. todays banner (london) is one of those, because it may be pollution but also a large quantity of humidity, a cause of London's known weather.

You want pollution, then go to Beijing.
But seriously, every city has pollution when you think about it. That's part of the experience living in one.

You have really cold winters in Chicago and also big difference, from -25 to +15

A retrospective view of last month maximum temperature (celsius)

Thanks for your wonderful class on matter changes and combustion, but i'm studying biotechnology, and i quite know about chemistry. I know that's water, you smartass, but how do you think that water is heated so that it's trasformed into vapour?
I'm not saying it's wrong, of course you need your heating systems, but apart from industrial areas, it's not very common to see such massive consumption of energy, that's all. And let's face it, the USA is by far the country that more energy consumes per capita in the world.

ANYWAY, great building!!!! One of my favourites

Energy, obviously. Put you were talking about pollution (referring to the picture) therefore your statement was wrong.

False. In Europe (where I've lived for 19 years) the cities (generally, but I will talk about the ones I've visited, therefore: Madrid, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Prague) will have even more "pipes" from which the "condensation" (or pollution) comes from, due to the lower density of the citycenters (same cannot be said for the outskirts of the cities), with less people per-building and therefore more air escapes. Come to Rome and then let see if you repeat what you just said. Other fact, in europe for heating gas is largely used, therefore you won't be seeing smoke coming out of chimneys (the system in Italy for example is attached to the external wall and even though it pollutes, there will be almost no visible outcoming).

Yes (at least generally, with small states like Monaco and some islands of the Pacific, and very close to the energy consumption of Australia and Canada). And we are talking about energy. We can also say that the USA are also the biggest producers of alternative energy (greatest producer of renewable energy, second largest producer of Biodiesel after Brazil ).
But guess what? Look for the relationship between wealth of the country and energy consumption, and you will see that the richest countries are also the ones with a higher consumption of energy per-capita. So for the rest of the countries, it's not ecology that stimulates a smaller consumption, but money. So sad....
