And my UCLA education has indeed served me well. I?m a student there and damn proud of it. Its level of academic excellence is certainly superior to that of USC?s, and it stands alone nationwide in athletic achievements. Being a USC fan, I know you already knew that.[/QUOTE]

Hmm..A superior UCLA education huh? All that academic excellence and they didn't teach you anything about apostrophes?

Anyway, let's get back on topic....In LA palm trees>oak trees

I caught that report on NBC News and they referred to them as "Canary Island palms" I think. Anyways in the report they said the reason they won't be replaced is the $25,000 cost per palm tree!

Mere student of Westwood High, I never said I advocated the removal of all palm trees. Nor will they start chopping them down. Get real.

Yeah, academic excellence. I'm sure those organ donors would agree...OH SNAP!!!!

Athletic achievements? when was the last time a bruin won the Heisman?

USC: FIGHT ON!
UCLA: DREAM ON!

Why does this street have no curbs? Is this within the LA city limits? Or is it the Valley? And "botox" as hard as you may wish "the Valley" always refers to the Land of Nod north of the Hollywood Hills never to the quaint, non-threatening enclave that is always referred to as "the San Gabriel Valley" or SGV for short.

If you've seen Beverly Hills' latest redo, they've actually combined palm trees with sycamores and chinese elm I think along their gilded streets most notably in the commercial area....I think it's a good balance. I don't like the way Santa Monica Blvd @ Century City came out. They only planted about a dozen palm trees at Sepulveda....they could have planted more along major intersections at least, say at Overland, Westwood, Beverly, Avenue of the Stars and Century Park East. That way it still feels like LA....

So, if the palm tree (whatever specie it is) ceases to be LA's symbol in the future, then what is? Freeways?

GO UCLA!

ROTFL. No seriously, surrender before you embarass yourselves like last year.
The most a Bruin can hope for Saturday is not to lose by more than 21 points. Notre Dame is a strong top-10-ranked team but we whooped them by 20 points last week. Your little team will be dealing with a team that's bound for the BCS Championship game. Step aside.

GO UCLA...GO AWAY!!!

Have a cote and see how many people prefer palms to regular trees. Alot of people go to Los Angeles for the palm trees it is part of the culture. Most other tree's suck compared to palm trees i know because i live in minnesota i would trade every tree up here for half the number of palm tree's. Besides you never know how much you will miss something until it's gone.

USC probably will win Saturday. i'm not crazy enough to start wagering my car or start cutting my wrists if UCLA loses. USC is known for its football tradition just like UCLA is known for its basketball one (ranked #1 in the nation baby ).

I think USC fans are celebrating a bit too early though. Notre Dame was totally over-rated this year. UM beat them by 26 IN South Bend, and an unranked UCLA team itself almost beat them too (if only our coaching staff hadn't F'ed up at the end). they were nowhere near top-10. you'll probably win big and wind up in Arizona come January, but you aint winning the BCS this year. you gotta admit, Ohio State just looks so damn good. (btw, this maybe should be another thread, but what are the most popular places to watch sporting events here in LA? i mean local bars, etc.)

one step at a time though. just remember what happened at Oregon State the last time USC didnt take someone seriously...

That's interesting... but I think it is wrong for several reasons.

1) The source does not specify where it is actually native to - that is, if not California (or N. America for that matter), then where?

2) I clearly remember from printed literature (the Golden Guide for trees) that it is native to S. California/N. Mexico.

3) There are a couple of other sources on the Internet claiming "not native" status, none of which display the plant's actual origin or even studies that contest the nativity of W. filifera to the SW US/N Mexico.

4) The vast majority of palms are found in the tropics. The assertion that W. filifera is not native to N. America may be erroneously inferred from the fact that native palms, in terms of number of species, are few in number within the US. W. filifera happens to be the sole native species of palm in the SW United States.

5) A simple internet search under Google and Yahoo, reveals that all sources that do tell of the native location all point to SW US and N. Mexico. Filtering the search to include .edu domains gives a similar result, with the notable Florida exception of course.

This is very interesting - I'm still not satisfied having not found a study that contests the nativity of the plant. It might be something recent. There's a lot more literature on plants (entire catalogs of angiosperms) in my university library, so I'll see if I can find anything new there.

Seeing that this thread has had a hard time staying on topic, what? with the Bruiser vs Trojans argument up above(aren't those condoms?) Looking even further up above, yes all the way to the top.......Are those 2 men up above ecstatic and unflenching Arab lovers? It's so wonderful to see 2 sheiks in love.

A balance would be nice. Some popular commercial areas should have their palms: Venice Beach, Wilshire, Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, Union Station, LAX, etc.

Personally, if the city came in and started chopping down the Palms on residential streets, I'd probably hold a rally of support to cheer the chainsaws on.

I really question if the people who like the palms ever walk in this city. If this weren't a car-centric city this wouldn't even be a question. The palm tree is pretty and that's it. It's like having a super model for a wife that can't hold a conversation, can't connect with you, can't cook, is horrible in bed and a terrible mother.

People really need to visit other cities and observe how they operate. When you do, L.A. doesn't come out looking too good.

Replacing the palm is #153 on the list of stuff to do to make this a better city.
