All work on future stages is on hold for at least 6 months and redesign will start once the go-ahead has been given

Most things are On hold in Abu Dhabi and therefore delayed. Lots of projects that have beed substatially designed and are in early phases of construction have been retendered as materials have crashed up to 80%. So why would you continue when your paying more than double the market rate for construction. Secondly project that are in concept design are on hold while the master developers try to figure out if they actually need so many buildings in the next 5 years.

Yas Island first phase to be ready by October

on Tuesday, March 03, 2009

The global financial crisis will not have negative effects on the execution of first phase of Dh147 billion Abu Dhabi-based Yas Island project, Aldar Properties said.

"Some 60 per cent of the project's first phase is complete and the whole phase will finish in October. The number of labourers on the island rose from 22,000 before a few months to 37,000 currently, and the number is expected to rise to 40,000 after two months," Steve Worrell, Manager of Yas Island Development, said.

He said during a journalists' tour of the island to take stock of the project's implementation that Dh24 billion had been spent on the project since its start in 2007 until now and the total investments in the first phase is estimated at Dh40bn.

There are no plans to lay off the workers, because the project is executed according to a timetable and needs a lot of labourers who are specialised in this field.

Therefore, the number of labourers has been increased to speed up the completion of the project.

He said the company attempts to take advantage of the global financial crisis by reducing the value of new contracts in the project, while it is committed to the old contracts signed before the last developments.

Hot circuit

By Nitin Nair, Senior Features Writer
Published: March 02, 2009, 12:19

Abu Dhabi makes its debut on the Formula One Grand Prix calendar this year. Nitin Nair goes on a site visit to bring you this update.

Grandstand Views

Philippe Gurdjian, CEO of Abu Dhabi Motorsport (ADMM) and the man behind the design of the Yas Marina Circuit, says one of the key ideas he had in mind while conceptualising the design was to "bring motorsport closer to the spectators".

The Western Grandstand will feature a superb run-off area that will actually have cars disappear under the spectators' stands when they veer off the racing line.

The three Grandstands can seat a total of 50,000 people. Richard Cregan, general team manager, ADMM says that one of ADMM's key objectives would be to make sure that the circuit becomes an active hub for motorsport all year long.

Swish set viewing

Though initial reports suggested that Abu Dhabi would have a Monaco-style street section on the 5.5km race-track, that idea was spiked on the design table.

What it does have in common with Monaco is the opportunity for the region's glitterati to watch the race from the luxury of their yachts at the marina – the circuit will host a sophisticated marina and a yacht club. So rest assured, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be high on the celeb quotient this year given the rather glamorous settings.

Pride and joy

One thing's for certain – by the end of this year, the Yas Marina Hotel will be on the 'Must-Visit' list for every motorsport fan. The iconic hotel will be the only one in the world that actually has an F1 track running through the hotel. So for a good price, guests at the hotel can lounge around and watch Hamilton and Co. burn up the tarmac.

When completed, Yas Island (Yas Marina Circuit is a part of the larger development) will have a Ferrari theme park, a Warner Brothers theme park, a water park, links golf courses, polo clubs, apartments and villas.

Identifying the icon

Most F1 circuits have one iconic landmark instantly recognisable to TV viewers. Closer to home, the Bahrain circuit has the disinct Sakhir tower.

Gurdjian thinks this may be difficult with the Abu Dhabi track, given that it has a few distinct landmarks. However, the Sun Tower, the solar-powered VIP hospitality facility that stands at one end of Start-Finish straight is a top candidate for that recognisable landmark tag on the Yas Marina circuit.

By February this year, the barely clad Main Grandstand and the pit buildings that stand on either side of the Start-Finish straight were already taking shape.

In numbers

7000: People working 20-hour shifts on the track

50,000: Grandstand seating capacity

01-11-2009: Race Day in Abu Dhabi, the last race of the 2009 F1 season

Yeah, the Marina here looks fantastic! And the design of the overall circuit is just awesome IMO! This is surely gonna be right up there with some of the best circuits on the calendar!

Roll on Melbourne!!

AD will definitely be a spectacular and amazing city to visit or live in. Once F1, al reem, sadiyat, yas, dolphin islands, or resorts like al gurm, nurai, or masdar city will be complete AD will really need the bigger airport cause that place will rock. And the best part of it all is that despite crisis all these projects are still moving forward!!
Very nice, can't wait to see how the city evolves.

Bear in mind its been almost a month since those pics were taken anyway. I also read somewhere the acttucal track will be finished by July before the hot weather starts and for testing. My main concern would be for the road infrastructure and landscaping. Oh, and dose anyone know if Ferrari World is due to be completed before race day??
But I agree, it dose look a bit tight.
