DEVELOPMENTS

During the next few years leading to 2010, Cape Town International will undergo a drastic facelift as part of ACSA’s R5.2 billion cash injection into the infrastructural developments of its airports. The projects for Cape Town International include:

A new Terminal Building

The construction of a R900 million terminal building set for completion in 2009 will soon get underway. This project will see a complete overhaul of the Domestic Terminal and will result in a central processing unit, which will process international as well as domestic passengers.

Elevated Road

While the existing Ring Road will stay as is, an elevated road will be built above it. The lower (ground floor) road will be a pick up point for arriving passengers and the upper road will be for departing passengers.

Multi-Storey Parkade (MSP ll)

An additional multi-storey parkade will be built to ensure that the airport consistently has sufficient parking capacity. This facility will increase the airports parking capacity by an additional 2 500 bays.

Apron parking bays and air bridges:

In addition to the landside developments, ACSA will also increase the parking capacity on the airside.
New aircraft parking stands will be built as well as necessary air bridges in Domestic Departures.

Railway link 'critical' for Cape airport

A railway link between the city and Cape Town International is critical if the airport is to handle the volumes of passenger traffic expected by 2010, says George Uriesi, Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) general manager.

The airport is to be given a R1,3-billion facelift by 2009 that is to include a new terminal, an elevated road, a plaza for public transport, air bridges and a multi-storey parkade. But there has been no budgeting for a railway link.

Uriesi told the city's mayoral committee this week that it had to consider a railway link as part of its 2010 transport projects.

Even in the years after the 2010 World Cup, the airport would struggle to cope with passengers and visitors arriving and leaving by road.

Uriesi said other international airports better handled bigger passenger volumes because most passengers used public transport.

The multi-storey parkade nearing completion at the airport would only just meet an immediate need for 4 200 bays.

Parkades would have to be built in 2008, 2010 and 2012 if the public transport links were not improved.

About 19 000 passengers, 30 000 visitors and 19 000 vehicles a day pass through the airport. It is expected 15 million people will pass through in 2010.

A public transport plaza and the reconstruction of the approach road are being planned as part of the airport's medium-term upgrade to facilitate better access.

An elevated road is to be built above the ring road. The lower deck is to become a pick-up point for arriving passengers and the upper for departures. All passengers will be processed at a central terminal by 2009.

Uriesi said the airport's 1 000-hectare site was large enough for 35 million passengers a year.

Developments in preparation for 2010 are expected to create 20 000 jobs.

New name for airport

Western Cape premier Ebrahim Rasool has proposed that Cape Town International Airport be renamed after the late trade unionist and liberation fighter, James "Jimmy" La Guma.

The plan will form part of a broader campaign over the next few months in a bid to ensure that the heroes and heroines "of every community, culture and group" are honoured in public spaces.

Rasool made the statement today in his State of the Province address at the opening of the legislature, where he also announced a R1 billion anti-crime initiative and a R1.2bn boost for housing in the Western Cape.

La Guma was a founder member and president of the SA Coloured People's Congress. He died, aged 67, in 1961.

Indicating that other key sites would also be renamed, Rasool said: "We submit this proposal in humility to kickstart a necessary public engagement that will hopefully take us closer to the common values that bind us together as the people of the Cape and South Africa."

He said that 12 years into demo-cracy, "there was hardly a single street of significance that reflects the architects of our freedom".

"In fact, we still live with the daily humiliation of native yards and boulevards named after those who gave us slavery, colonialism, religious bigotry and apartheid.

"Surely enough time has passed to embark on a wide-ranging debate … to find consensus on how to honour and memorialise the architects of freedom and democracy.

"When will we allow our children to engage with the legacies of patriots such as Basil February, Steve Biko, Adam Kok, Chief Albert Luthuli, Imam Haroon, Sir Richard Luyt, Molly Blackburn, Hilda Bernstein, Alex La Guma, Gaby Shapiro, Looksmart Ngundle, Christmas Tinto, Autshumao, Sarah Baartman, Dullah Omar and others?"

To stimulate debate, Rasool said streets in the province had been lined with posters of freedom fighters. "We are fortunate that in the DA's eagerness to embrace Taliep Petersen by renaming Keizersgracht after him, they have opened the door to a renaming process … we thought they were implacably against."

Rasool's proposal follows the renaming of Johannesburg International Airport after former ANC leader O R Tambo.

La Guma was born in Bloemfontein in 1894, and spent most of his life in Cape Town, where he worked in the textile industry.

He joined the Communist Party in 1924 and also served as a secretary of the ANC in the Western Cape. He was also a founder of the National Liberation League.

His son, the novelist Alex La Guma, who was a high treason trialist in 1956, died in 1985.

Glasgow based budget carrier, FlyGlobespan are set to announce a new route direct from Glasgow International to Cape Town. Flights are expected to operate twice a week with a Boeing 767-300 commencing in October 2007. Check back with FlyGlasgow for the latest on this development.
