That'd be pretty awesome to live across the street from the Wiltern. I think thats what it was in that picture. It was like the Wiltern then across the street big single family houses. Niice. If it was still here today you could walk across the street for concerts. But then again where would the Metro station go?

That previously posted pic of the AON center is right aftert he fire. You could clearly see the damaged area in the 12th floor.

The Los Angeles Theatre in 1931

On Broadway, at night, the opening night premier

Closer look at the Theatre at night

Auditorium detail

You can see why they were called Picture Palaces.

Lights in the foyer

Interior view of entrance doors

Theatre stage

An outside view

You can see why they were called Picture Palaces.

Great pictures!! it's nice to see how LA has really evolved in the last century.
From the very beginning this city was meant to be a STAR.

Well, Bunker hill use to be a bunch of Victorian homes, but they were demolished (and some moved) because the city drafted a master plan for bunker hilll, thats why it looked to desolate.

GREAT photos!! It would be nice to have all these photos in a book or two, like a coffee table book style. Nice quality with some interesting historical context.

That way, I can show some of my east coast friends/relatives that say, "wow, I didn't realize how small LA's skyline is". I could actually show them how much of a newcomer LA is and how much it has already accomplished.

Anyone know of a good libro that would have such historical photos?

The two best library-archived sources of historical Los Angeles photos:
- USC
- The Huntington Memorial Library

The LA Central Library has some, but they rely on the above two for some material.
