One of the best pictures I've ever seen.
I can literally insert myself in there.

These pictures can easily make us forget that this was one of the most racist periods of our country's history. Some of us would do better staying right where we are. Pity, because it does look peaceful and laid back.

That park above (Pershing) looks more familiar
to my childhood than the Grand Park ever would.
.
Lets see what good ol' 5th and Hill looks like today,
compared to 5th and Hill of yesteryear!
.
.
Seems to have been more activity back then.

I actually thought it was 7th and Alvarado (MacArthur),
but MacArthur doesn't fare as well either.
.
.
Pity.

Where's the Biltmore? Surely it was built by the time that the second picture was taken. I dunno....the black and white photo makes the picture appear softer and because of the facades of the buildings being more ornate they seem more inviting. The newer buildings seem cold and aloof. The color photo isn't all that bad in reality though. Needs more trees and it would help if Pershing Square wasn't elevated, unfortunately I'm not sure what could be done about that now.

The Biltmore opened 3 years after that picture was taken so possibly the land was being cleared at the time.

Streetcars ran in mixed traffic downtown...and I should say that I know that not all did but these pictured obviously did. What REALLY is the difference between a bus and a streetcar beyond aesthetics and more on functionality? A bus is highly functional. Yet you get people who will ride the slow streetcars of SF all day in mixed traffic but come back to LA and turn their nose up at a bus.

I always lament the process that Pershing Square has taken. I hate the concrete slab that Legorreta & Legorreta made. I much more prefer this.

(You can almost see MacArthur park in the style too)
