The Tiger Woods Dubai breaks ground

The Tiger Woods Dubai broke ground today on its private residential golf community and resort that will include Al Ruwaya, the world's first golf course designed by Tiger Woods.

Abdulla Al Gurg, Project Director of The Tiger Woods Dubai and Bryon Bell, President of Tiger Woods Design on site at the future home of Al Ruwaya, the world's first golf course designed by Tiger Woods.

The Tiger Woods Dubai, a member of Tatweer, will be located on 55 million sq ft in Dubailand, the region's largest tourism, leisure, entertainment and lifestyle destination. Expected to feature one of the best golf courses in the world, The Tiger Woods Dubai is slated to open in September 2009.

'I'm excited we've reached this milestone and can't wait until The Tiger Woods Dubai welcomes its first residents and guests,' Tiger Woods said. 'I've worked very hard on the design of Al Ruwaya and am looking forward to seeing it take shape during the next few years of construction.'

Saeed Al Muntafiq, Executive Chairman of Tatweer, said: 'The Tiger Woods Dubai is an exceptional project. Thus it is imperative we provide an unparalleled community and high-end services that would not only match, but exceed, Tiger Woods' expectations.'

Surrounding Al Ruwaya's dramatic and beautiful 18 holes will be a professionally staffed golf academy; an iconic clubhouse; an 80-suite boutique hotel with 10 private bungalows; a well-being spa; a fine-dining restaurant; 197 residences; and relevant upscale community services for residents and guests.

Abdulla Al Gurg, Project Director of The Tiger Woods Dubai, noted that Tatweer has made an extraordinary commitment to the overall development of the project. Al Gurg, along with Bryon Bell, President of Tiger Woods Design, were present at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Al Gurg said: 'We are well into the process of planning and coordinating all of the different disciplines including golf course construction, landscaping, irrigation, and development infrastructure. This groundbreaking marks the beginning of preliminary earthworks and we will work around the clock to achieve the scheduled opening of the golf course, hotel, and luxury residences in September 2009.'

The Tiger Woods Dubai is collaborating with Tiger Woods Design and government authorities to finalize all aspects of the detailed master plan, which is expected to be released in late summer.

Bulk earthworks to enhance the natural topography of the site are expected to take six to eight months to complete and will result in elevation changes of up to 30 meters across the entire site. The globally respected construction firm Dutco Balfour Beatty have commenced works on site. Key to the construction of The Tiger Woods Dubai is the care taken to conserve and protect the environment, including the use of recycled water to support the lush landscaping and 280,000 square meters of lakes throughout the development.

Tiger Woods Dubai holds preview of holes at Al Ruwaya

Two weeks after celebrating its groundbreaking, The Tiger Woods Dubai, a member of Tatweer, yesterday offered a preview of holes 12, 17 and 18 at Al Ruwaya, the first-ever course designed by Tiger Woods.

12-hole masterplan.

Al Ruwaya will be a par 72, championship-quality course with six sets of tees ranging from 7,700 to 5,300 yards.

'Al Ruwaya means serenity, so I really wanted this course to be an oasis from the pace of the city,' Woods said. 'We've worked hard to create a unique environment that's fun to play.'

Al Ruwaya will be the centerpiece of The Tiger Woods Dubai located in Dubailand, the region's largest tourism and leisure project. In addition to Al Ruwaya, The Tiger Woods Dubai will feature a boutique hotel & spa, a clubhouse, a golf academy and 292 luxury homes. It is expected the master plan will be released in early Fall 2007.

'We are very excited to see how Al Ruwaya is taking shape,' Project Director Abdulla Al Gurg said. 'The Tiger Woods Dubai is going to be an unbelievable development that will attract visitors and residents from around the world.'

About the holes
Hole 12, par 3, 181 yards
'Visually it's very dramatic due to the elevations and vegetation, but it's also very strategic. It plays over a 30-foot depression of native grasslands and shrubbery to a somewhat crowned green. Pin position will dictate strategy off the tee and club selection will be very important. You are really going to have to think on the tee about your shot, especially if the wind is up.' - Tiger Woods

Hole 17, par 4, 341 yards
'This hole will have a big impact on the finish of the round. It plays slightly uphill but downwind, and presents several strategic choices off the tee. This is a great drivable risk/reward hole that provides an opportunity for birdie or eagle heading into 18. Smart decisions and proper execution will be rewarded, but it will be hard to save par if you make an error.' - Tiger Woods

Hole 18, par 4, 507 yards
'I wanted the finish of the round to be a real test both mentally and physically. It all starts with the tee shot. One option is to challenge the right side of the fairway for a shorter approach to the green, but doing so requires contending with the water and playing over it on the approach. The green is well guarded by the water so golfers will have to decide whether to challenge right side pin positions or play away to the left. Overall, I think if you walk off 18 with a par, you will feel like you made some smart decisions and executed properly.' - Tiger Woods.

They say you can design your own house.

Something they should have done for the palm islands.

It would have been a lot better even if they had kept the same designs as they have on the Palm now but just seperated them better, as in not putting five of the same house in a row. I bet if you were to take the existing houses on the palm and rearrange them you could make it so no more than two villas in a row were the same.

Work begins on Tiger Woods Dubai Clubhouse

Construction work on the first commercial building at exclusive golf community Tiger Woods Dubai, has begun, Emirates Business has learnt.

The 139,000-square-foot clubhouse, which will include a private members’ lounge, a signature restaurant, private banqueting facility and built-in suites is being constructed by Dutco Balfour Beatty. The firm has the contract for all commercial buildings at the development around the golf legend’s first course.

Work on the Clubhouse is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2009. Ron Young, project manager at Dutco Balfour Beatty, told Emirates Business the work started last week.

“Now we are erecting the scaffolding and installing all safety measures. The actual construction work on the structure will start in the next few days,” said Young.

Apart from the Clubhouse, other commercial buildings at the exclusive golf course include the Golf Academy, a hotel, three Halfway Houses, maintenance facilities for the Al Ruwaya Tiger Woods golf course and retail and commercial facilities to sell golfing supplies.

Dutco Balfour Beatty was also awarded the bulk of the earthworks contract for the Al Ruwaya Tiger Woods golf course development and work on the project has progressed steadily ever since the ground-breaking ceremony was held last June.

The contract for the construction of all residential buildings has been awarded to Al Jaber Contracting. Being built on an area of 55 million square feet at Dubailand, Tiger Woods Dubai will include Al Ruwaya – a golf course designed by golf’s premier superstar – a golf academy; a clubhouse; a high-end destination spa; a 360,000 sq ft high-end boutique hotel; 22 palaces; 75 mansions; 100 luxury villas and a community retail area.

Project director of Tiger Woods Dubai Abdulla Al Gurg said the Clubhouse will be the first building to be built at Tiger Woods Dubai followed by other commercial and residential structures.

Although most construction projects across Dubai are experiencing delays due to various factors including increasing cost, non-availability of materials and staffing shortages, Al Gurg said he is confident of the timely completion of Tiger Woods Dubai.

Al Gurg said the master plan for the project was approved on Tuesday by the Dubai Municipality

I'm so excited that Tiger Woods is designing his first golf course in the Arab world.

I'll make my way to the golf course once it's done.
