The 124-story hotel is part of one of the 6 arena proposals that the city is reviewing in a couple days. It would be downtown. Yeah, it includes a casino.

So far I haven't gotten any sense whatsoever that the FAA has any intention at all of allowing tall buildings in Las Vegas.

That's the thing: I really don't think the FAA will approve this one. When I first read the committee minutes for this thing when the news about it first came out the first thing I thought was "this thing has no chance". Maybe it's all bluster, but it sounded very hostile towards the idea of having such a high building here.

CAN U IMAGINE LAS VEGAS HAVING THE TALLEST TOWERS IN THE AMERICAS (after Chicago of course)im guessing this new 124-story will have more than 500 meters or even taller than the Freedom Tower, who knows.. All we can do is wait until we can see the rendering..

it will, i mean if they approved The Chicago Spire in Chicago, why not in Las Vegas if it smaller than The Chicago Spire?

Because the Chicago Spire is in Chicago and the Las Vegas tower is not. If I remember correctly, the FAA was grousing about a nearby air force base, not wanting a big obstruction near it. I think the strip is like right between the international airport and the air force base, so the FAA guys were blowing a gasket thinking about an almost 1900 foot tower being in the way.

Edit: I just looked at the google maps image of LV. The airport seems to be quite close to the strip, but it kind of goes along it so the approach doesn't cross it. The air force base, on the other hand, has the approach going directly over the strip. That will probably end up dooming this plan. I predict that the planning commission and the FAA will say something like "go ahead and build the tower. But you can't make it taller than the Stratosphere."

The site is just outside of the FAA restricted area.

From what I understand, the issue with this tower is not so much that the FAA says "We have this restriction here so you are prohibited from building this building" but more along the lines of the zoning committee asking the FAA if they should allow this building to go ahead. Of course the FAA is saying that they shouldn't and so far the committee seems inclined to follow this recommendation. Of course I am basing this on the minutes from the last meeting when the news about this tower first came out so who knows what negotiations are going behind the scenes. But I think that the likelihood of this being built is a lot lower than the other massively tall towers being planned around the world.
