A lot of people do not know this but channel 8 did a story about Crown Las Vegas and they said that the Stratosphere is an air hazard to the planes flying around. This is actually true because I work at the Stratosphere and that place gets about 3-6 planes get real close to the tower.

If it were true that the FAA would never "recommend" a tall building being built, than there would be no buildings over 100 feet on the strip because the county planning commission requires everything over 100 feet to get an FAA "recommendation".

The FAA isn't so unreasonable that they would oppose a 100 foot tower. In general they don't have too much problem with buildings less than 500 feet. But have you noticed that Las Vegas doesn't have any tall buildings? The Stratosphere Tower is the only one over 200 meters.

Just to be clear about the FAA requirements:

At least the delay times are getting shorter - first the developers asked for three months. Then they asked for two months a few times, then they asked for a month:

COUNTY COMMISSION ACTION: December 20 , 2006 HELD To 03/21/07 per the applicant.

COUNTY COMMISSION ACTION: March 21, 2007 HELD To 05/02/07 per the applicants attorney.

COUNTY COMMISSION ACTION: May 2, 2007 HELD To 07/18/07 per the applicant.

COUNTY COMMISSION ACTION: August 22, 2007 HELD To 09/19/07 per the applicant.

Their lobbyists must be done arm wrestling the FAA by now. I bet we find out this time. I'm sure the wacky debt market is making it tougher to finance this thing now. But then again, money is lining up to develop the north strip with MGM. OK, I'm rambling now. Let's just keep our fingers crossed.
