I'm on the fence right now as to whether I will renew my Spacing subscription or not as it has again run out. This last issue "Disaster" seemed a bit silly to me, and increasingly they pad the issues with copy from the other Canadian Spacing mags. Not sure I like it as much as I used to.

Is this becoming an epidemic with the current condo boom?

Has falling glass been a problem for other locations around the globe that have had a recent boom in condo development?

CBC has a set of really cool before and after images of Toronto's skyline:

That is pretty cool. And as cool as all that growth is (most of it condos), it's a shame that some of Toronto's better buildings (i.e. Royal York and the bank buildings) are now obscured from the lake view by a sea of blue/green glass buildings that don't quite measure up to the buildings they now hide.

That was amazing!!
Glass buildings covering the Royal York or not, I'd still rather have it that way than living in a city were time stands still!

My point is that it's too bad that the most visible architecture from the lake isn't necessarily the best the city has to offer. I never said anything about wanting time to stand still.

True, but I try to think of the downtown as being like an onion; you peel off different layers to expose the core. Change is an inevitable product of progression, I suppose. I agree with preferring the look of the older buildings (in the daylight shots at least), but it is wonderful having all those wasted brownlands south of the core suddenly becoming a viable business and residential community. When I think of how horrible it used to be south of Front Street and how pleasant it was to ride my bike around there this past Monday, I can only marvel at how quickly it is changing.
Recently I was watching an evening Blue Jays game against Kansas City on tv. The camera did a slow sweeping panorama of the downtown from the lake to the core from Roger's Stadium, and it all looked quite glittering.

Does anyone remember the name of that thread where we guessed the location of photos? I can't find it, and have a cool location to post! Thanks.

Postal Station K on Yonge, near Eglinton, could be demolished:
http://torontoist.com/2012/07/rebell...tal-station-k/ Which makes me wonder to what extent 'listed' heritage buildings are actually protected. Under listing, the city must be notified 60 days in advance of the owner's intention to demolish the property and Heritage Preservation Services can also review any building applications affecting the site. But does anybody know if the city can refuse a building/demolition permit based on the property's heritage attributes, and that HPS can advise them to do so, or is that only the case under designation? I am wondering what protection 'listing' provides if it just gives HPS a chance to review the application.

Oh my God I hope not.. I love that building. That is one of, if not the only building in Toronto that has the name of the short lived King Edward VIII (he of the Wallis Simpson fame) on it.
