Kazanlak - City of roses | Казанлък

I think it's time I present you my home town Kazanlak.

Kazanlak (Bulgarian: Казанлък) is a city located in Stara Zagora Province, Bulgaria. With a population of 61,779 people as of 2006, it is located near the geographic center of the country.
The city is famous for being the center of an area called the Valley of Roses and its massive military factory "Arsenal" (top quality AK 47s in the world)

May be because I have lived in New York too long, but Kazanluk looks really clean. I see that the streets have no pot holes.

Yeah, trolley buses have been around for good 30 years now.
As for the road infrastructure, the city is in pretty good shape. It was one of the top priorities in the master plan.

I am not surprised at all. Majority of my fellow Bulgarians haven't even heard of the city, never mind knowing its location. Given Kazanlak's rich cultural heritage (Shipka pass Russo-Ottoman battle, UNESCO Thracian tomb...) you would expect it to get some exposure and reap the benefits of tourism.
Unfortunately it remains relatively unknown (and unspoiled ) but that's why I am here - Kazanlak's official SSC ambassador

The current mayor has attracted some foreign investors and the city is experiencing a construction boom. I wish I had taken my camera on a citywide stroll when I was there this summer.

I will try to find and post better pictures because the ones above really don't do it justice.
Btw how do I post regular size pics instead of thumbnails using Imageshack?

@ zzibit

I've had it with imageshack lately. It's very unrealible and often painfully slow. Try Photobucket.

Oh come on... I can not imagine a sound Bulgarian not having heard of Kazanlak; not knowing where exactly it is located, maybe.
I have never been there though. Looks nice.

Oh believe me it's true, esp. when it comes to the Sofia crowd. (no harm intended) My favorite story was when 3 years ago this sofianka I met asked me seriously "Do you have paved streets there?" I almost pissed in my pants.

Where was that "sofianka" from? The neighbourhood of Filipovtsi, or Fakulteta maybe?

Nice pics of Shipka

Although, talking about potholes, I remember back in the days Kazanlak had some huge ones.

zzibit, do you know the black guy from Nigeria who owned a store on the west side?
