Cloud Seeding Project Launched

Cloud Seeding Project Launched

Clouds will be seeded in the first phase in Kerman, Isfahan, Fars, South Khorasan, Charmahal-Bakhtiari and Kohkilouyeh-Boyerahmad provinces.

TEHRAN, Dec. 9--Iran on Saturday launched a groundbreaking project to seed clouds as part of efforts to increase precipitation in the semiarid country.

According to IRIB News, Rasool Zargar, deputy energy minister, said at the ceremony to inaugurate the project that the initiative is expected to bear fruit in April. He said that Russian meteorological experts are cooperating with Iran’s Water Resources Management Organization in the groundbreaking project.

“The Russian side will provide Iranian experts with the required software and technical know-how,“ he said, adding that clouds will be seeded in the first phase in Kerman, Isfahan, Fars, South Khorasan, Charmahal-Bakhtiari and Kohkilouyeh-Boyerahmad provinces.

Zargar said two special airplanes will be used for the job.He said a laboratory dedicated to cloud physics and materials used in seeding them will be constructed in the country next year.

Iran’s climate is largely arid or semiarid, to subtropical along the Caspian coast. On the northern edge of the country temperatures fall to below freezing and remain humid for the rest of the year. Annual precipitation is 680 mm in the eastern part of the plain and more than 1,700 mm in the western part.

To the west, settlements in the Zagros Mountains basin experience lower temperatures, severe winters, sub-freezing average daily temperatures and heavy snowfall.

The eastern and central basins are arid, with less than 200mm of rain and have occasional desert. Average summer temperatures exceed 38 C. The coastal plains of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman in southern Iran have mild winters, and very humid and hot summers. The annual precipitation ranges from 135 to 355 mm.

Good luck. We haven't had much success in Saudi with cloud seeding, but maybe you can. Ironically, it works better in colder climates! There's been more success in inducing snow with cloud seeding technology than rain.

The biggest problem with Iranian people is that they don't know just how great their country can be.
