for one, I was reading in popular science that the building is moving upwards while simultaneously the basement is being dug, saving almost a year on construction time

What a nice building right over there! And it's fast construction is really unique. It looks like a monolith though but its great!

looks like they took a note from the wtc and put enormous columns at the base and then they gradually go down to normal size a few stories up.

Yeah, I read that too. Supposedly it is called the top down method, and it looks like other buildings will soon be using the same process. I heard that Pingan IFC, Samsung Parc 1, and the Abenobashi Terminal Building Tower, are applying this, but The Shard is the first.

A custom deep-diving rig put the tower’s structural columns into the ground before excavation took place, so one construction crew can dig the basement—which otherwise puts everything else on hold—while another installs elevators, staircases and mechanical fixtures on top of the columns. Engineer Bob Gordon of the Mace Group estimates that the technique will save seven months of construction time.

it kinda makes it sound like the shard was first, but still london is first to do it either way.

I had my 15mm Fisheye and 70-200 lenses with me at lunch time, so it's super-wide or telephoto today and nowt in between.

St Thomas Street

New steel adjacent to Joiner Street from St Thomas Street

Core Rising

With the rising steel (and soon concrete) we now have some decent views from London Bridge Street

As usual, there are a few other photos I've not posted here in my Shard Gallery
