That would be about right. The highest number that's visible is 14 and there's about another floor inside.

Just for any who dont know, it was said by someone working on the shard that the core will rise by around 3m a day (though id say it seems a fraction less over average time) for a few weeks then slow down a little. What really seems to be happening is that the core rises a little more slowly monday/monday night through tuesday/tuesday night, then picks up pace for the rest of the week up until around saturday afternoon then it seems they clean out the pumps and is then a rest period saturday night through till monday morning, then the cycle repeats.
Someone working on the shard said that once the 5th floor is laid (which is the floor they are laying down at the moment) then the construction of the steel work proper will begin at a pace of 1.5 floors a week, at the moment it is the calm before the storm!!
I think that the construction of the steel will begin within the next two weeks.

With this (the Shard) being due for completion pre-Olympics does anyone know if the re-cladding of the Hospital next door will also be done by then.

With the eyes of the world on London it'll be a pity if the Shard is still being accompanied by that grey monstrosity come 2012.

Funny you should ask that god, I asked the same question in the london forum, the answer i got was that the nhs are a bit tight to be spending cash on a face lift hence it looks like it may not be happening.
But if your a god surely you could turn the situation around...

This building is going to be so cool, but it sure is an ugly block right now.

I thoroughly enjoy looking at pictures of construction sites in London. I think they look among the neatest in the world. The speed and apparent order really shows how much planning went into this.

That's fair enough.

You can't really expect the NHS, especially with the economy as it is, to spend out on things like that! I didn't realise they were expected to fund it. I assumed it'd be the LDA, or the developers in the area putting the money forward for that.

thought I'd show you what that new flooring along St Thomas Street elevation looks like from close by...

If anything, it makes the building seem even more huge now it's in place

p.s. should have some more pics up later

As I promised earlier, some more photos from today.

Usual plan - my favs and points of interest posted here and some others to be found in my Shard Gallery

Started on Platform 2 of London Bridge Station this afternoon, which affords a good view of the progress of the core

Round on London Bridge Street at the north west corner of the site

this is looking back south along the western side of the core with the new floor

Incidentally, new column has appeared right next to the station (shot through the mucky plastic on the pedestrian bridge, so apologies for the quality)

And the floor now laid along St Thomas Street

Some concrete activity in the basement was visible

I also stopped by for a few minutes on the way home this evening

I'm quite surprised at how fast this is progressing. The structural engineering firm is WSP Cantor Seinuk, the same firm as the new WTC, so apparently they know what they're doing. If they can figure out how to do every building like this that'd be amazing.

The steelwork on the Shard is interesting and complex. It also took a lot of effort to climb up and paint 'Cranes Etc' on, I can tell you!
