Pretty cool how the jet vapor trail stops exactly at the end of the tower crane.

The View From Richmond Park

The view from Richmond Park becomes more exciting everyday. The Shard is clearly visible and is about to overtake Guys Tower any time now. Yippee!

Superstructure and Cladding

Duration: to Spring 2012

The main central core has reached Level 34 and continues as a 12 hour daytime operation only.

The next key milestone for the core is level 38 in mid July at which point the cores changes shape internally. The internal steel staircases need to be completed up to this level before the core launches again – expect an approx. 2 week pause in significant concreting works while this is occurring.

Passenger Lift installations also continue within the central core. Late July sees the installation of the first Jump Lift on the project – another first for the UK construction industry.

Structural steelwork has reached Level 18 and the concrete floor infills are following on up to level 15 The external glass cladding has now started on Levels 5 and 6 along the St Thomas Street elevation. The Shard of Glass now has some glass.

Central core and internal fit out

Duration: to end of project

The main central core has reached its first milestone at Level 21 – the basement slab pour (above) will allow the core to rise higher; structural steelwork now reached Level 8; concrete floor infills are currently up to level 6; main lift installations have commenced within the central core; the external glass cladding is due to start on-site in mid-April at Level 5 on the St Thomas Street elevation.

The superstructure is impressive!

The amount of materials used in this tower is surely enourmous.

I stopped by to take a few pics on my way home this evening.

Southwark Street (west)

Duke Street Hill (north east side of the site)

More London/Tooley Street (north east)

with a little reflection in Foster's 2 More London

the view from Guy's courtyard shows the progress of the second row of glazing on the SW corner

and the two panels along Joiner Street/London Bridge Street yesterday have multiplied

One of those big steel joints being delivered on a truck on St Thomas Street afforded a closer view

Was really impressed to be able to see the top of the climber block from the Eurostar as I came into St Pancras on Saturday evening. I could clearly see the top of the London Eye, the Canary Wharf buildings, Big Ben and the black band across the top of the concrete block. It was dusk so the light from a crane above the core could be seen too. Tallest in London by December maybe - aprox another 90metres (130m -> 220m) to become that tall I think.
