How old are the buildings that surround this?

The current London Bridge station dates from the mid-19th century onward (the station first opened in 1836).

Guy's Hospital Tower was built in the early 1970s (though the hospital has been on the site since the 18th century). Some of its other buildings have been constructed in the last 20 years.

Southwark Cathedral dates between 1220 and 1420, mostly.

There are a few older buildings such as the George Inn on Borough High Street, which dates from 1676, but probably the majority of the buildings in the area are 19th century, following in the wake of the railway, with a significant amount of new development since the mid-1980s.

Personally I wish it would grow even faster, but that's probably physically impossible. One day it will be possible to build supertalls in a matter of weeks, maybe in fifty years or so considering our rate of technological advancement... Maybe in my lifetime...

I'm struck with the order, the tidiness of the jobsite. Minimum of clutter.

Nah... patience is the key, especially with british projects where H&S and paperwork rules...

Yes. Towers will eventually build themselves, with nanotech assemblers. This is a great book -

If anything the rate has SLOWED. The Empire State building at around 100 stories was completed in about 400 days. The steel work at some points was apparantly climbing at the rate of 1 floor a day.
Now that skyscrapers use concrete cores you have to wait for the concrete to set before jacking up the core. The fastest these seem to rise is 3 floors in a week. The Burj Dubai was quoted as acheiving that ... and I'm sure that mini core (currently on floor 14?) has risen 3 floors in a week (it's very small so there's not much concrete to pour).

Level 35 now showing as I went past on my way home today The steel work has really started to climb as has the cladding. Fact is that this will be completed for the summer of 2012 so regardless what we the public see in terms of how quick or how slow the build is taking, doesn't really matter!

Level 35, cool. Its going to be quite an achievement when this thing gets to floor 51 - the first building in the UK ever to have more than 50 storeys

Is that true? There currently are no buildings in the UK over 50 storeys? Anyways this tower is making very nice progress!

This tower is also featuring in part 2 of the BBC program IMAGINE a short history of tall buildings. including interview with Renzo Piano (with shard model on background).
