It's not silly, the building was designed this way for a reason, the protruding cladding is architecturally significant and not pointless. This building is designed to be beautiful as well as functional.

@ Buyckske Ruben: It won't be half way up until it reaches around floor 42

Pretty soon. They’re finishing off level 38 at the moment. It will take 2/3 weeks to reconfigure the slipform. And then it’s all seam ahead to the 190m mark where the last decrees in size will take place.

that's for the core. I'm really digging on the second core coming up at the foreground.

Also regarding the glazing - I'm curious how they will reduce the window number as the building narrows as it rises... we haven't seen any obviously "odd", "non-rectangular" windows... maybe this is why there's windows hanging off the edge? Maybe studying the renders will make it clear...
Thats basically like saying why does that building have a spire? but noone thinks spires are a waste of money eg you wouldnt say, why have they put that big piece of metal on top of heron tower its such a waste of money, because its a part of its architecture.

Architecture isn't just about function. It's about style, aesthetics and decoration too. Little details like this are what help to make buildings unique and distinguished from others.

The Shard will be the most eye-catching modern building ever constructed in London, and will likely be around for centuries - it's important they don't skimp on the details.

Why should you care about the cost of a privately funded project? It's the developer's money. They can do what they like with it.
