This is already my favourite tower of London. I think London deserves much more skyscrapers with such heights. If you look at the size of the whole city there are not that many skyscrapers.

It tapers, which will fool the eye into thinking it is taller than it is by exaggerating the effect of perspective. Standing apart from other towers only enhances this by removing visual reference points. The Eiffel Tower has the same things going for it, is almost the same height as the Shard, and looks really tall in the flesh. When finished I suspect it will have visual impact similar to a 400-500 metre tower, rather than the 310 metres it will be.

I often see this when getting off at London Bridge station, and it looks massive; and I obviously expect it to look massive and look out for it whenever I'm in the area.

But the first time it came home to me just what this tower is going to be like was a few days ago when I was in Greenwich - at the Old Naval College. I turned around to look over the river and it took me by surprise, standing alone against the red evening sky, because I wasn't looking for it. It's already dominant and so futuristic, and from this distance I was able to extrapolate the rest of the tower from what's already built and imagine how it will look in two years. I really think people aren't going to know what's hit them when this is finished.

I didn't have a camera with me sadly, but I definitely want to see it from that place again when it's finished.

well spotted......by year end the bulk of the structure will mostly be in place , i imagine the eye catching effect by then to be even bigger.

Hadn't thought about it that way, the isolation effect.

Its maybe an illusion, but the floor space looks small compared to the core.
Especially near the core setback.

The core is not dead space, it will be used for lifts and toilets.
