The Commerzbank tower does not have a spire, it has an antenna, which, unlike a spire, is not an architectural feature, and therefore is not part of the buildings height. The Commerzbank tower therefore is indeed 259m tall, no more. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

It won't last long, Mercury is rising on the good pace, and recently final decision was made regarding 403m Okhta center in St.Petersburg - it will be erected.

That's all fine and dandy, but the question was whether the Shard will be the tallest building in Europe, not how long it will have that title. What happens in the future does not matter in this context.

Oh well. I'm going to say the stereotypical british SSC thing and say it's not about height for me, but about quality and originality... This skyscraper may lose it's height crown quickly but it will stay along with the gherkin and the bishopsgate tower and the leadenhall tower as the BEST tall buildings in Europe... I cannot think of a better French tall building, or a german one.

Even if it's just for a week, at least it reigns as the tallest building (in Europe) in its time.

Shard is a nice tower, regardless its high. Let's focus on that
The only thing I don't like here its neighborhood - eclectic constructions around partially close the view, these kind of buildings require more space around.

Nah, they make it all the more interesting in my opinion. Like the shots of the Gherkin with the Tower of London and various Georgian architecture in them, the location of the Shard is something which makes it stand out from a lot of other supertalls.

Mercury maybe, but why mention Ohkta? By the time that is finished, the Federation Towers will be completed. The Gazprom Center will likely never be the tallest building in Europe. But it very could be the second tallest. Hell, if you are going to mention that, you might as well include the Tours Hermitage which will be completed around the same time as the Okhta. They might even build the Tower 365 in Frankfurt by then. All of them are taller than the Shard, but the Shard will be done before all of them, including Mercury City Tower.

Anyway, this is really looking nice and is already making quite an impact on the skyline.

Looks like they have finished the "second" core and are about to start work on the third and final!

I'm fascinated by these sectional sliding forms. Do you think they have left the original one in place just as advertising or do they need to wait for the steel to catch up with it before dismantling?

Wonderful stuff - getting this photo taken this morning and uploaded by 10am!!! You're a star!
And wow, it's risen a full floor above the 2nd setback thing already!
I wonder if it will rise as fast as that 2nd stage and the mini-core we saw... eg, 5-6 floors in a 7 day week. If so by the end of the month they might be stopping again for the final setback (where the core becomes really really small).
