Yeh this tower certainly beats many UK records! How will it become the tallest hotel in the world (outside of Dubai) though? I thought the building had to be solely a hotel for that to be the case...

It won't, there are many hotels which are taller. There are also many skyscrapers which are partially occupied by hotels, for example the Ritz-Carlton in the 484 m tall International Commerce Center in Hong Kong or the Grand Hyatt hotel in the 420 m tall Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai.

From the article:

The Shard will become the tallest hotel building in the world outside of Dubai once completed, by virtue of the Shangri La hotel.

This can't be right? The International Finance Centre in Shanghai has a hotel that occupies the top floors and the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong does as well. They are both much taller than the Shard. Even the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago is taller than the Shard. The soon to be finished Abraj Al-Bait Hotel complex in Mecca will be nearly twice as tall as the Shard and it is mostly hotel. I am sure there are many other examples of mixed use buildings with hotels in them that are also taller than the Shard, I just can't think of any right now.

What were the authors of the article trying to intimate?

But as I pointed out in my previous post, when it comes to mixed-use hotel projects, the Shard is by far not the second tallest.
