That multicoloured building in cybertect's last two pictures is pretty damn terrible.

ah yes the budget hotel! It is quite a mixed area, architecturally speaking, so it doesnt feel quite so in your face in real life. But yes budget hotels are a bit of a scurge and quite a few have sprung up in this area with mixed results, I dont mind the cladding on this one so much, its the tiny windows that always grates me! Hopefully the Shangri-la hotel in the Shard will make everyone else pick up their game.

He's talking about the 'spire' on the backpack of the Shard, not the Three Spires.

Yes that’s correct. A 100 odd m spire was planned for the shard and would have been rather unconventionally put not at the top but lower down. Some people liked the spire, some thought it detracted from the aesthetics of the building. Personal I struggled to see the point (no pun intended) of it.

I always liked that spike, I didn't know they removed it from the design.

Looking at the photos its amazing how guys hospital seems to blend in so well with the shard & adjacent box shaped mini tower they are building. In my opinion guys looked ugly and totall out of place on its own but it seems so much more acceptable now and adds to the architecture in a strange way.
