I've been watching this from my vantage point in Aragon Tower today. Wondered what they were up to.

Not great art, but here are three pictures I grabbed on my way through the station this morning, showing progress on demolition of the bus station roof.

Dismantling of the north side box at level 53 is about 3/4 complete.

Will the bus station redevelopment be complete in 2012 as well?

As we had some glorious Spring sunshine at lunch time, I took a stroll down through Snowsfields and Long Lane today. I fancied a change from the run straight down St Thomas Street.

Pics can be found in my Shard Gallery. Here's a selection.

South East glazing from the junction of Snowsfields and St Thomas Street

Concrete rig from the same location

Melior Place

Guy Street Park, on the corner of Guy Street and Weston Street

A little further south, on the Kipling Estate; with Burwash House and then Simla House to the right. Both 21 storey buildings date from 1966.

a reminder that London City Airport is nearby

Tennis Street

The Borough War Memorial on Borough High Street

Southwark Street

Once they reach that second core box, the massive factor will be even more gigantic.

'Building firms should take on young offenders'

Building firms were urged today to take on more young jobless people, particularly former offenders, in the pre-Olympics London building boom.

Mayor Boris Johnson wants them working on major projects such as Crossrail and the Games site in Stratford.

Sixty ex-offenders are already being trained for jobs in the Olympic Park, while Transport for London is negotiating work for another 60 on the Shard construction site and the Tube modernisation programme.

Research shows that ex-offenders who land a job are 50 per cent less likely to reoffend, but many find it hard to find work because of their criminal record. With the Prince's Trust, the Mayor's Office is funding training courses for former offenders. Kit Malthouse, the deputy mayor for policing said: "The construction industry is ideal because it attracts strong characters who can provide hard-working role models."´

Mr Johnson said: "Ex-offenders deserve a second chance to turn their lives around and make an honest living. In these tough economic times it is hard for everyone out of work, but teenagers with criminal records often hit a brick wall.

"For every person we keep out of the prison system we potentially save taxpayers £50,000 a year. "

The initiative follows the success of Project Heron, pioneered by Mr Johnson, which drastically cut reoffending rates at Feltham young offenders institute. It offers intensive support to young offenders to further their education or find work, both in custody and after release.
