Southwark calls for more Shards

The London Borough of Southwark hopes to become home to more “landmark buildings”, following the success of the Shard.

Speaking at the launch of an exhibition about development in the borough, council leader Peter John said he “loved tall buildings” and he hoped Renzo Piano’s skyscraper would help kick-off further development. “I welcome any developer with ambitions to create stunning landmark buildings which boast a mix of uses, especially retail,” he said.

The exhibition, Southwark Reborn, runs at the council’s offices at 160 Tooley Street until May 20.

That's my view as well. Tall buildings, yes, but shorter than the Shard.

Southwark Bridge by Mexichino, on Flickr

This before and now gives some idea of how this part of Southwark has changed over the last decade. Original image is from the 60s I think.

Taken from Vertigo 42 SO143, it's a bar atop the tower42. No entrance fee, however you are expected to buy a drink and it ain't cheap- cheapest glass costs £10.
