It has been said countless times but the current concrete core is not supposed to grow any taller. The rest of it will be steel.

Out today testing another £30 eBay wonder lens that arrived in the post this morning - an early 1980s Canon FD 200mm f/4.0. It is ridiculously sharp.

A selection from the day, but as usual more pics can be found in my Shard Gallery

East side from Tooley Street

The incredible shrinking tower crane on the East side

The respositioned Xena Deck

Top of the core

SE corner of the slipform rig from Weston Street, with added foliage

Looking straight up at the SE corner

A Byrne Bros hopper being hoisted over St Thomas Street

SW Corner glazing wing

South side of the Backpack

Reflections on the 'crease' on the west side

I took a wider lens with me for my journey home through London Bridge station this evening.

Last picture shows that without the hospital the Shard would stick out even more than Taipei101

I'm guessing the tower has simply grown too tall for it? I'm no expert on these things, cybertect will know

The hostpital next to the tower should get a new cladding, it completely ruins the shard felling

Or perhaps it's simply not required anymore?

Yep. Information on the UK thread is that there's another TC going to be mounted on the building somewhere around level 56 in the near future.

With that, the top TC and the one that's just been put on top of the Backpack, that crane is redundant. Since it plunges through the Mini Backpack down to the station level (you can see it on the left in the last photo I posted above) and is also tied in at the plant levels, it's going to be in the way for interior works.

I always thought this looked absolutely hideous on paper but now that it's being built it's absolutely FANTASTIC! I'm falling in love with it.
