When i look at new world trade center in NYC, it is in the middle of the others!

Why they didn't choose a closest cumbersomed place in London?!
i think the placement of the shard is perfect, a building like this needs an open area to allow people to see it from all angles, it would be lost in a crowded city centre, and i imagine the reflections on its glass from other high rises would make the shard look less elegant

Quite.

There are a lot of reasons why The Shard is situated where it is - being on top of London Bridge station helps enormously with transport issues.

If they had chosen to build it in the City of London, it couldn't have been as tall as it is - due to CAA restrictions on building heights for the landing approach to London City Airport. The City's on a hill, a site lower down and across the river in Southwark sidesteps that a bit.

Being in the City would change the brief enormously too. The Shard is a mixed use building: offices, residential, restaurants and a hotel. That's not a typical mix for a City design, which is usually purely commercial offices or trading space. What's appropriate for Southwark isn't appropriate for Leadenhall or Bishopsgate.

I could go on...

The Shard is designed in response to a specific site with a specific brief. Just taking that design and dropping it somewhere else isn't going to make sense.

Hi Folks
My first post!

Just to say that if anyone is planning to visit my home town of Windsor, Berkshire you can do a tour of the Round Tower of Windsor Castle now and it has a quite jaw-dropping view of London with the Shard clearly prominent on a clear day!
The tour guides even pointed out the building under construction and I couldn't believe my eyes. Has to be a clear day though! Would be great if someone on this forum with a camera better than mine could get along!

Alternatively just walk up to the end of the Long Walk in the Great Park and it is visible from there too!

This building is freaking beautiful....I am saying it a thousand times.....London deserves unique design like these since they are not allowed to populate supertalls.

Thought I'd have another crack at a Joiner this evening with some better light and a little more deliberation.

I think it's a great design but IMO the cladding is too bright.
