Crane Gives Dizzying Bird's Eye View Of London

Britain's highest ever crane is being put in place to complete London's Shard tower - offering a dramatic bird's eye view of the capital. Workers will use the machine to complete what will be the tallest building in the European Union, near London Bridge.

When fully extended the crane will sit at 1,040ft (317 metres) above ground level - making it more than 20ft taller than the building's eventual peak. The extraordinary piece of equipment will be used to complete the top 23 floors from a total of 95.

The Shard will become the 45th tallest in the world when it is completed in 2012.

A few more pics from lunch time today - I had to visit the Post Office on Borough High Street and grabbed these on the way there and back.

West side from St Thomas Street

South side and Backpack from St Thomas Street

Renzo Piano's The Place under construction next door, reflected in The Shard's glazing

Joiner Street canopy and glazing wing (the light was too good an opportunity to pass up)

Early afternoon sun catching the more transparent edges of the Shard's glazing wings

Gratuitous shot of the east side of the spire

Thanks for all of the good info on the history of height restrictions and the geographical circumstances that contributed to the London skyline! Can't wait to see continued growth in the future.

Beautiful but not tall. The highest occupied floor only seems to be around 230m.

Burj Kalifa... Height 828m
Highest Occupied floor... 584m

If you're not into counting spires, the roof height of the shard is 305.78m with a 4m spire.

Not tall? Hell, even 230m is rather tall for London - relative to the rest of the city, the Shard's absolutely enormous!

If I recall correctly the highest publicly accessible floor is about 244m. But the top itself is more of a crown than a stick-type spire, much more integral to the design.

It's more like One Canada Square I suppose. I don't think the pyramid on top of that building is open to people, but who the hell would only class it as a 200m building?
