The Shard has a very iconic shape, I think it looks better isolated, if it were in a cluster with other 200+ towers, it would be eclipsed by them. The way it is, isolated, with its special shape, do it better to make it an icon for London. (the photo above shows that perfectly) In a few years, when in a movie they want to state "we are in London" they can show an image of the Shard, as an alternative to the Parliament that is always used.
Just as they use the Transamerica Pyramid for San Francisco, that has a similar shape and it is also relatively isolated from the main cluster.

It's certainly a very international project, British location, Italian design, Qatari money and workers from everywhere.

Agreed, looks much better isolated, except of course they need to demolish that hideous Guys Tower, a dinosaur for the brutalist movement, the worst period in the history of architecture (Though some architects are attempting to eclipse that accolade with their twisty freaks, though not so far in London)

Alone the Shard looks less like a functional office skyscraper but more of a monument like the eiffel tour/pyramids, or an observation tower/communication antenna etc. If it were in a cluster it would become more iconic as a skyscraper, as is the Sears tower or the Empire state building, towering over a cluster of other skyscrapers. As it is now, it is juxtaposed alongside an abomination of a structure that is Guy's. That's just my opinion.

What is that curious patch of lighter seeming cladding around the lower part of the tower? Has someone ordered the wrong shade of glass in that bit?

Anyone know if this is likely to be topped out and cladded by the end of March 2012? I will be in London at that time.
