The good thing is that Guy's Hospital (which looks horrible) kinda vanishes now that the Shard has almost reached its final height! Shard adds so much to the skyline.

The thing is that in nearly every picture taken with the Shard in it the Guy's hospital is also include.

Race to finish Shard before Olympics

Mace has drafted in a mini mobile crawler crane to accelerate the installation of the final curtain walling at the top of the Shard
.

The firm is racing to hand over the building by the beginning of June, more than a month before the Olympic Games gets underway.

It has called in the services of crane specialist GGR and lifted a 6-tonne mini crane onto the 283m high final floor deck of the Shard—making it the highest ever compact crane in Britain.

GGR will be working from the rooftop for the next few months to lift glass panels from a storage unit on the 62nd floor onto the levels above on the north and west sides of the building.

The existing tower crane will now concentrate on completing the south and east elevations.

A total of 11,000 angled glass panels will eventually cover The Shard’s fašade which has been specially designed to reflect the London skyline.

The Unic URW-706 compact crane was chosen to work at the summit of the skyscraper thanks to its proven experience with rooftop lifting.

Phenomenal. The panorama really looks like its been taken from a plane or helicopter, I cant wait until the viewing deck opens... it will really rival the London eye! (360* virtual tour)

Really nice article. But I think it won't open before the end of the olympics.

Open for office, hotel and residential use? No. But it should be externally complete, and therefore look impressive in helicopter and horizon TV shots.

Good to see the project is heading towards completion. Was there when the foundation work was just beginning.

A modern transamerica pyramid in a very avarage glass facade. This tower really is nothing special at all....

But on the other hand, it does look good, it does look supertall (mostly because of the lack of a real skyline around it), and it really is a groundbreaking height for Londen (and Europa).

So, mixed feelings

I don't know why people keep comparing it to the Transamerica pyramid, that is just one of hundreds of pyramid shaped buildings. It wasn't the first tapering tall building (eiffel tower, heard of that?) it wasn't the last one to be built (ryogyong hotel, Pyongyang), and indeed it's not that famous a building outside America, certainly nothing to do with the shard and in fact about as dissimilar to the shard as it's possible for a pyramid shaped skyscraper to be. I'd like to see a better glass facade, other than perhaps the Gherkin's.

BUT although I am not such a huge fan of it these days while I was at first, yet again I love this building and to me it looks like the Eiffel Tower but a Modern English version of it that certainly will have its own unique impact on the city tourism. I dare to bet that once this one is finished, people would love to dine there, enjoy the amazing tremendously unique view over London and even stay at the hotel. I SURE will be staying at whichever hotel is going to be located inside it to just enjoy the views of London and use it as my map to get around! LOL
