I love it. It's a great juxtaposition of old and new. I especially like the views from the Thames that include the Tower Bridge and the London Authority. Looks like some scene from a sci-fi movie. I love that Millennium Bridge too.

Putting this spire was described even in Poland
http://wiadomosci.gazeta.pl/wiadomos...o_budynku.html
(only in Polish so I don't post here any part of the article)

PS - congratulations! This kind of architecture suits me

BBC breakfast won't be getting those skyline shots anymore. They'll be moving to Salford soon.

Officially topped out.
*I edited my post to change the article slightly, I changed 'Europe' to 'EU'.

Shard's spire now in place on the EU's tallest building
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-17567455

The highest part of what will become the EU's tallest inhabited building has been lifted into place in London.

The Shard near to London Bridge, in Southwark, now reaches 310m (1,016ft) high.

The final piece of steel - a spire weighing about 500 tonnes which is 66m tall - was craned into place at the top of the building earlier.

Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the south London skyscraper is made up of 87 storeys.

The UK's highest crane moved the spire into place.

The spire alone is made up of 800 separate pieces of steel.

To ensure a precise fit, builders first constructed the spire at ground level at Dalton Airfield in Yorkshire.

They then dismantled it before delivering it to London and reassembling it ready to be hoisted into place on top of the Shard's concrete core.

Irvine Sellar, Chairman of Sellar Property Group, the developer, said: "This is another milestone in the development of the Shard which has become a global iconic landmark building.

"It is a 'vertical town' that includes a viewing gallery, restaurants, a five-star Shangri-La Hotel and residences as well as offices and, of course, it will be open to the public."

The spire is being clad in 516 panes of glass - a small part of approximately 11,000 panes that have been used to clad the Shard overall.

Work on the exterior of the tower is planned to be complete in June.

Howdy London Friends! This is a truly spectacular building. Could someone mark on a map where this building is? I think I know, but some of the pics confuse me with orientation... I've been to London once many years ago, but it is evident I need to come back! What a city...

You could just be helpful, you know...

Here you go, M'sFan. You should definitely come and visit London again, it's changed a lot, especially in the past decade or so.

So, yesterday, I ended up with 270 photographs, which posed a bit of an editing mountain.

I'm uploading two batches. Some more general pics to follow, probably tomorrow, but first off - here's some excerpts from my small record of topping out...

A little after 10am and the first of the new sections of steel are just in place, seen here from Empire Square

SE view from Weston Street

Ladder being lifted to the top

From the top of Guy's Hospital, it looked like this

Lunch at a café on St Thomas Street, then a little before 1pm the last section of steel was peeking over the top of the hoarding at Gate 1.

I made my way to Leathermarket Gardens, which I figured would afford the best view of events, and passed my time lounging in the spring sunshine waiting for something to happen.

The BBC helicopter turned up about an hour later

Then the action started. Here's the sequence

All done!

London, now officially with a top-notch SUPERTALL (and a bunch of Skyscrapers growing on the other Bank of the Thames), has substantially increased its level of awesomess.
