^ it's already topped out but the mecury tower in moscow is not topped out yet. i think this is the reason why it's been described as europe's tallest building

According to Wikipedia, that Moscow tower (i didn't even know such a tower was U/C!) reached 310.80m on the 22nd of March 2012 which, if true, means that The Shard has never been the tallest building in Europe as its highest part was lifted into place a few days after that which made it 308.5m tall (according to Wikipedia).

So far I saw the following descriptions:
- Tallest building in Europe (almost certainly not true)
- Tallest inhabited building in Europe (not sure if this is in any way different from the first description)
- tallest building in the EU (most definitely true)

I guess it would make the best sense to go by the last description because it is 100% true and it still means The Shard is 1st on the tallest list.

Another thing is that many people understand 'Europe' as the EU. The European Parliament (not EU Parliament), European Commission (not EU Commission), European Court of justice... the list may go on. Hence Europe=EU.

Technically, of course, Moscow is Europe too but in real life it is not regarded as such which is why it does not fall under 'Europe' in the minds of most poeple whereas newspapers just try to go by what people have in their mindsets.

it does not matter how tall those towers in moscow are, if they are not finished or topped out yet they can't be considered the tallest buildings. the shard was the tallest building in the european union since last year but it was not recognized or placed at 1st in the ranking of the tallest buildings until last week before it was topped out. being said that the shard will become the tallest building in the entire europe for a very short moment (before mecury is topped out or finished but this tower is moving too slow). i don't even know why i am clarifying this, as the matter of fact the shard is a beast, truly an iconic supertall, an eye catcher which needs more recognition and acknowledgement.

The Shard is not finished either. It's still a construction site

Being or not being topped out is of no relevance because it is a very narrow technicality which is only interesting to us skyscraper-nerds. If the media articles wanted to be correct and clarify the matter they should have written 'the tallest topped-out building in Europe'. But they didn't. Because their intention was to write exactly what they wrote. I suspect, many of those journalists don't even know what 'topped out' exactly means and whether that tower in Moscow was topped out or not. They just wanted to make a cool sounding title as they did.

Matter of fact, The Shard is not the tallest building in Europe even if it is the tallest topped out building in Europe.

Switzerland is located in the CENTRE of Europe - Continent!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...erland.svg.png

But it is an independent country, that still has borders ! And it's not in European Union

Look at the hole in the middle )
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...orders.svg.png

And last, but not least - THE MA{ OF EUROPE !

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Eu...s_boundary.svg

So, it follows, THat THE SHARD is The Tallest Building in the EUROPEAN UNION !

But the MErcury City Tower in Moscow is the Talles building in the whole European CONTINENT , AKA = EUROPE

PS: For those who are not friends with the geography

A building cannot be called the tallest in Europe if there is another building which is taller. Topped out or not is irrelevant.

I find the IBC center of Moscow very underrated, though. I personally find the City of Capitols to be superior architecturally to most London skyscrapers.

On a side note, I cannot argue the brillance that is the shard. It's just a shame it could not be part of a larger cluster of skyscrapers.

While the Shard has a unique design, in my opinion, it will be superior to the Mercury City Tower in Russia, where in my eye's the tower in Moscow looks so easy to build, just concrete and a few adjustments while it goes up, and with the spire cancelled, it's nothing special. Mercury City tower can be built in over a year if built in Shanghai and the cladding isn't that great either.

Europe's tallest building in terms of unique design.

Whatever you say, the height is measured in m (ft etc), not in other terms
Pyramid is really unique. Nobody in this world had built something like this before. While Mercury is a boxy tower copied from dozens of similar towers. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
