It's been given the traditional British welcome: indifference with a side order of grumbling. Having said that, if you stand on Waterloo bridge your pretty much guaranteed to hear a lot of conversation about it from tourists and natives alike, and most people's complaints are more along the lines of 'myeh, building a skyscraper in a recession, disgraceful', rather than criticising the building itself.

I think people will grow to like it though.

piano is great but i prefer sir norman foster who designed the gherkin, wembley stadium, city hall etc in london and hearst tower in ny. his designs are outstanding.

but they are both world class architects.

simply amazing!

just out of interest, are there still a lot of people that want the hospital gone or reclad?
personally, I think the contrast between old and new is quite interesting, plus it no longer sticks out.

Congrats from Canada... Your first supertall!
First, Australia, now the UK, we need a supertall too.
In the 70's we built our tallest, First Place in Toronto at 298m, oh so close.
We have been waiting ever since.
(CN is a tower, not a building)

What is that nasty tower block? (the tallest one next to the shard).

I hope they are going to knock this down. Ugly as hell.

It's an important hospital, therefore they won't ever knock it down. Fortunately they've just started a recladding project there.

I think Christopher Wren would approve the Shard but if he designed it it would be all limestone and mosaic.
