Piling appears to have started. Expect this to be moved to U/C as soon as a mod can be bothered

From the website given by Will above:

The Herzog and de Meuron towers will be located in Southwark, directly behind City Hall, obscuring the south-facing view from the office of Boris Johnson, the mayor of London. Johnson will have the final say on whether the spires will be built.

Brilliant photos, Newcastle Guy! The Shard is finally U/C!!!

So it looks like piling is starting slightly ahead of schedule, unless they're just preparing for it - March was the predicted start. But, hey, the earlier the better!
(Time for this to be moved to the U/C section.)
(I've changed its status on Wikipedia. )

I think the article is wrong, Government can always overrule the Mayor surely? Boris cant stop a project from being accepted through planning so why should he be able to stop one himself?

Fantastic news. Now that BD has topped out The Shard and WTC 1 will be the two big builds globally for the next few years. I hope that as it rises through and above the London skyline it will demonstrate to Londoners what is possible in these dark times and install some confidence towards the Olympics.

Contracts signed! Mace is ready to start building ASAP!

Formal confirmation to be announced today with construction price believed to be around £425m

Mace has finally signed the deal to build the Shard of Glass building next to London Bridge railways station.

The contract was inked over the weekend and the news ends weeks of negotiations between the firm and the Qatari financiers on the 310 m high scheme.

Formal confirmation of the deal will be announced later today with the construction price believed to be in the region of £425m.

Mace will carry out the work on fixed-price contract after it came up with the proposal back in October 2007 when the developer, led by Sellar Property, initially ditched Mace and the construction management route it was favouring.

Sellar asked Laing O’Rourke to have a look at the deal under a fixed-price but Mace came with a fixed-price of its own.

The project has been dogged by funding problems and just before Christmas had to be rescued by Qatari Diar – the state-owned real estate company that stumped up an undisclosed sum to keep the scheme on track.

QD then brought in Sir Robert McAlpine and EC Harris to run the rule over Mace’s bid to give it a second opinion.

The development consortium on the scheme, which is called London Bridge Quarter and carries an overall £2 billion price tag, is called LBQ – which features three Qatari banks, a Qatari real estate company along with Sellar. The five all have equal stakes in the development.
Cheers to DarJoLe for finding the news!

The Empire State Building was a beacon of light for New York and the world during the troubles of the 1930's. The Shard will fill the same role now

Finally it is in this section of the forum. Didn't think I could ever get this excited about a building, but damn I am happy that London is finally going to get this wonderful tower. It's already a very lovable city with many impressive landmarks, all it was missing was a landmark supertall.

I hope you're right. I can see your side of the story - the article could possibly be wrong.
