The point I was trying to make was, why build a tall building with hardly any useable space at the top?
Look at 1wtc, some of the buildings in Moscow. Plenty of useable space at the top.
I'm beginning to have the same reservations about Shanghai Tower, which is a building I love watching. If you look at the area of the floor plates at less than halfway up they look pretty small compared to the lower ones, so what will they be like at the top.
Btw, people like yourself who can't bear different opinions are boring grow up.
And as far as rich people in this tower are concerned, I think it will only be russian gangsters or oil shieks who will have the dough to live in it.
Your comparing a mixed use building to office buildings. The Shard has larger floor plates at the bottom to accommodate the demand for large open offices, and then smaller floor plates at the top for multi-levelled apartments. The middle accommodates well the hotel rooms. The building also wouldn't have looked as elegant as it does with vertical sides. Not every building has to be exactly the same. That's what makes architecture so interesting, and why most people are on this forum. Also if you don't like it that's your opinion. Other people like it and that's their opinion. Neither are correct. Architecture should spark debate otherwise what's the point?

functionality v aesthetics is the trade off for many a building. the only way for renzo piano to achieve his vision of the glass shard was to accept that the smaller floor plates at the top of the tower would be vastly expensive. as such, the shard may not have even been economically possible had the apartments near the top not been some of the worlds most expensive.

i read somewhere that the bishopsgate tower fell foul of this trade off. the pinnacles radical design is undoubtable beautiful, but the limited floor space on the upper floors make it functionally and economically a non - starter for office use. As expensive apartments, maybe it could work.

i really hope the pinnacle is completed but it can be seen that we are lucky when such buildings are built.

they are art in the sky

they can be expensive folly
