The Shard inauguration: Lasers to be beamed across capital from new tallest building

Landmarks around London will be hit with coloured lasers next week for the inauguration of Europe’s new tallest building, The Shard at London Bridge.

A spectacular show will take place on July 5, with 12 lasers and 30 searchlights illuminating the night sky over the capital at about 10.15pm.

If you’re not in London to see it, the spectacle will streamed live on The Shard’s website and Facebook pages to mark the building’s external completion.

The show will see coloured lasers reach out from the 95-storey building on the South Bank to other major landmark buildings across the capital; including the London Eye, the Gherkin and Tower Bridge.

The display will be accompanied by classical music: Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and the Finale from Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite which will be performed live by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO).

As the music reaches its crescendo, the laser show will culminate in the illumination of The Shard itself, lit from all sides by powerful searchlights rising high into the sky.

The following morning from 9am, tickets to The View from The Shard will go on sale.

Opening next February, this attraction will allow visitors to see London like never before.

Designed by the architect Renzo Piano, The Shard is adjacent to London Bridge station and forms part of the London Bridge Quarter regeneration project developed by Sellar Property on behalf of LBQ Limited in partnership with the state of Qatar.

You should have used a more modern up-to-date photo with the cladding. See Ryugyong thread.

Gibbon's Rent, London

Quote:
Luscious foliage sprouts up in London's backstreets under the shadow of The Shard | Friday 29 June 2012

As London prepares itself for the official inauguration of The Shard next Thursday (5 July), in a quiet laneway between offices and residential units, a young Australian architect and a local landscape designer have been injecting a little greenery. Andrew Burns and Sarah Eberle have transformed a narrow cut-through into a flourishing green passageway called Gibbon’s Rent with help from members of the local community

I can't see how those two buildings are even comparable. Shard vs Trans-America Pyramid is a better comparison.
(Although we all know who would win by a long shot )

Found this picture, which is some 3 months outdated, but the angle is unique (at least I hadn't seen it).

Yes The Shard is great, but when you say this should rival Top of the Rock , dont forget the Top of the Rock is 850 Feet, so 50 feet higher to observation deck area , but please do not get me wrong I think The Shard is great for London, I wish to go to London some day and see this beauty! PS I know The Shard stands taller than Top of The Rock, I was just talking in terms of Observation area and The Shard is London and Europe's tallest.

I happen to agree with that opinion ľ Guys Hospital is oppressively bad, and the re-clad only offers a minimal improvement.
