Blimey. Haven't checked on this project for about a year as I thought it would not be happening for a long time. Talk about timing! Great news, and it will be a very good aquistion to London's skyline.

Great to finally see this in the construction section - only a decade after it was first proposed...

We don't waste time here in London!

Shard developer tells Mace to finish by May 2012

27 February 2009

The developer of the Shard has told Mace that it expects practical completion of the building by May 2012.

Earlier this week, Mace signed a deal to build the 310m-high tower at London Bridge after months of delays. Work due to start in the next three weeks Bernard Ainsworth, the managing director of London Bridge Quarter – which consists of developer Sellar and four Qatari investors – said: “May 2012 is the date we’re working towards and we expect some occupancy by then.”

Ainsworth declined to reveal the fixed price that Mace had agreed to do the work for, but it is believed to be in the region of £425m.

He added that Mace would hand over final details of its construction programme in the next few weeks before it formally begins work on 16 March.

The contract award was held up after Qatari Diar, the real estate company that provided an undisclosed amount of money to keep the project on track, brought in Sir Robert McAlpine and EC Harris to check Mace’s bid. Ainsworth said McAlpine and EC Harris had no more involvement in the project.

Excellent, so, 38 months to complete. It's gonna be great watching this over the next few years. Roll on 2012!

Finish by May 2012... lets not forget that the tower itself (the structure) will be top out sooner!
Lets say structure T/O at the end of 2011.

London is holding up really well at the minute....so far UC

Shard 310m

Pinnacle 288m

Heron Tower 246m

Riverside 1 Tower 241m

Riverside 2 Tower 191m

Strata 147m

The Landmark 140m

Middlesex St 107m

Which translates to:

1 Supertall 300m+

3 Skyscrapers 200m+

4 High Rises 100m+

Plus numerous other UC & planned towers due to start over the next 18mths, as well as all the Olympic construction work..

The only real disappointment (and its a BIG one) is the uncertainty over the 225m Leadenhall tower.. which is looking increasingly unlikely to ever be built in its current design.

Still, not many world cities can match that, considering we are in the deepest world recession since the 1930's.

Indeed, London is doing well at the moment. The Shard, while it may not be the highest supertall in the world, will be one of the best.

The train station will follow... its highly complex in terms of construction and logistics as there is the Shard, the baby Shard, Thameslink 2000 project with new viaducts and the new London Bridge Station.

As far as I know it is going ahead and the new station will be built but certain things have to be built in terms of Thameslink 2000 and the Shard itself before they can start work on the station.
