thanks for the explanation, corerising! i am sure you didn't get those pictures easily and i must say they are priceless and outstanding.

and your pano shot also gives me the idea of how massive london is.

there are highrises in croydon too but i've never seen them in any london skyline picture. anyway, thanks again for sharing incredible shots!!!

You only have to look at the utterly risible history of the tall buildings in the UK to see that the blame lies squarely at the feet of the architectural profession. There are a small handful of genuinely good tall buildings in this country - almost all of which have been built recently. The vast majority have been so bad that many have already been demolished, reclad, or are shortly to be so, after just a few decades.

The Shard and some of the other recent projects are starting to change attitudes to tall buildings. I welcome that, but let's not forget why there was so much hostility in the first place.

And let's not pretend Paris is any better. It is indeed a city of architectural treasures, but the second half of the 20th century has not been kind to the city, especially in the burbs.
Totally agree with your comments. Until very recently, as you stated, the vast majority of tall buildings in the U.K., all built in the post WW2 era, were of such banality and low quality that this understandably lead to a strong anti high rise building campaign. Since the advent of the London docklands redevelopment started in the 1980's, there has been a number of notable tall buildings erected but also some freak designs that, in the main, have thankfully been rejected. As for the Paris suburbs, well that's an object lesson on how NOT to develop a city, is it any wonder there is social strife in these hideous, monstrous creations? If I had my way the architects and planners would be lined up and shot as perpetrators of crimes against humanity!

It's beautiful. The leasing per square meter is way too high for some individual to pay looking at the location of the building. Nevertheless, the area doesn't quite look like a business center though.

The building is arguably beautiful and worth some commendations.

Wait till we see the public reaction to fenchurch street, the cause of the skyscraper may be set back a decade or two.

Along St Thomas Street earlier this evening, the hoist platform is completely gone and the preparation for fitting of the last set of canopies is underway.

^ That's great, thanks for the update. I haven't been outside London Bridge station to check-out the Shard in several weeks.

Here's a photo from flickr... the Shard from Lewisham (south-east London):
