I love those colourful lowrises. They bring some life to an otherwise grey, dull area.

Totally agree. So much so they distract you from crossing the nearby road so you almost get hit by a crazy London white van man... Or is that just me?

On another note, I'm loving all the recent pictures of the Shard and how it looks different in every single one

I am not sure if Saint Giles deserves the appelative "dull", it certainly is (and always has been) full of life as far as I can tell. It is not the "area" that was dull but the building that has been demolished in order to make way for Renzo Piano's cluster of buildings. Perhaps by "dull" you meant architecturally dull, which it was (at least parts of it). As for gray, I kind of agree. That said, Renzo Piano's colourful, lego-like work definitely enlivens an area that always has deserved better.

The site was formerly occupied by a dim, brown government building that nobody noticed. The location was a curious dead spot in the midst of famous and lively places. It is on the edge of Covent Garden and of Theatreland, with the British Museum and Oxford Street nearby, and the jazzy 60s tower of Centrepoint next door.

The design is a product of the finagling and finessing, the punts, gambits and haggles, under which development in British cities proceeds. In the early days of the project the then mayor of London Ken Livingstone said he wanted something big, because he liked big things in general and especially near public transport interchanges, as Central Saint Giles is. The London Borough of Camden, however, wanted something smaller, so as not to overwhelm the historic areas of Covent Garden and Bloomsbury.

I guess 73 usable floors and ~87 in total. Emporis even says 95 floors ( don't think that's correct ).

On the Dutch News site nos.nl there is a great video about Prince Andrew abseiling the building.
I hope it's watchable for everyone, not only for certain regions:
