I would agree, but it is our (UK) one and only supertall with no more in prospect in the foreseeable future. So you can kind of understand it if people go a bit overboard on it.

What is the outstanding thing about this tower?
1. it is the first (ever) supertall in the entire EU
2. it is the only supertall that the entire EU can offer/show off
3. it is the current record holder and still the highest building in EU
4. it is one of the biggest projects that a world class architect ranzo piano has done
5. it is the most expensive building in the world
6. it's shape is unique, unlike the boxy ones you normally see in many cities around the world
7. it's materials, steel frames, glass, cladding and construction progresses are absolutely outstanding
8. it is designed to become a new modern landmark (like the gherkin & london eye) of london and as you know about the global status of this city

so, yeah this is a fantastic achievement that not only the londoners (british) but the rest of europeans should be proud of.

i wasn't very attracted by this tower , but i went to london and what i can say is that it is very impressive when you first see it for real . especially the top that you can see emerging above the lowriser from everywhere you are in the town

It'll probably be the only supertall in western Europe for quite some time. Hollande's anti-business agenda makes me think that Paris' Hermitage Plaza won't get started, even if the developers win against appeals by the NIMBYs.

1WTC is currently $3.9 Billion, the Shard is $3.8 Billion; and 1WTC could very well go into the $4+ Billion zone.Other than that,it's all true and Londeners and the entire UK should be proud of this achievement.

the total value of the shard is £2.5bn which is equal to $4.029 billions by using the current exchange rate.

I hope therichest.org has their facts straight

The New Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York cost $1.5 billion when it was built in 2009. For this reason, a single game ticket for a Yankees game is priced at $2,500! In spite of this, the stadium is always filled and sells out all of its tickets with every baseball game.
Not all Yankee stadium tickets are $2500...

Seeing as there is no official thread for the Guys Hospital renovation outside of the UK section. I'll post this here, seeing as some of you have regularly expressed your horror at the ugly brute ruining the Shard...

It's coming along quite nicely...HUGE improvement with still lots further to go.

The are so many sub forums its impossible to find things here... where are you discussing the hospital renovation? Although personally, i think the only thing that would make it looks better is a thousand lbs of dynamite.
