I disagree I think the contrast is hideous, the whole ground-space could be so much more visually seamless and open. If it were up to me I would have no brick and keep the glass flow continual, theres a way round everything.

but the entire development sits on a giant brick viaduct, I think the brick works well in this case

I can't wait to see this tower when I'm in London next. When is it actually open?

No, visually, the brickwork ties the base of the building to the ground and London Bridge Station itself. The line of the brick mass also ducks from the outside to the inside along its length, emphasising the lightness and transparency of the glazing wall at ground level. If it were all glass, that contrast would be lost.

I keep coming back to Mies van der Rohe with this building and it's akin to the way he handled the glazing and stone elements in the Barcelona Pavilion. Having one without the other would radically change the nature of the building.

I should confess I do sometimes think that along St Thomas Street, with the change in materials it's almost like The Shard is a little like a lady gently lifting her skirts and showing off her ankles.

Anyhow, just when you thought the roadworks had finished on St Thomas Street, there's more digging going on.
