It's scheduled to be topped out well before the opening.

A few pics from this lunchtime

new tower crane from St. Thomas Street

Mace adding some colour to the locality

Keltbray lorry and workers

Same lorry being loaded up with spoil

More steel arriving on site

I didn't remember this from Friday

Basement slab concreted over the weekend (I had a shot of the reinforcement in my last update)

Lots of bar in the basement

Hockney-esque composite (i.e. it was a very rough effort )

My Shard Gallery contains other pics not posted here.

In that photo, those columns (include the new ones on the left) are part of the building it self?

Yeah! You said it!

Although the pinnacle is a different London building, and london techincally isn't a building, and this isn't the pinnacle thread.

I love your trolls..regular as clockwork.

Maybe we could replace all the 3 stories with skyscrapers so It can fit in.
But then it would look like Chongqing, Guangzhou or Shanghai, those over polluted masters of urban planning.

Brief update from today, mostly with my 15mm fisheye lens.

For a bit of fun to illustrate how much progress has been made, this was a similar view on 5th November.

back to today...

Some new grey steel being hoisted from the collection that was on the ground. I got the impression it was being fixed into place to make another bay, but couldn't hang about to find out.

and a couple of other fisheye views showing the new tower crane in situ

What an arrogant statement, and London isn't, which big city isn't especially with a population as big as China's so quit your ignorant slurs. And ignore the troll, he gives us Chinese a bad name . Back on topic to the Shard.

Qatar pledge on tallest European skyscraper plan

LONDON LANDMARK: Qatari backed project to be a symbol of Qatar and UK ties. (Getty Images)

by Sinead Cruise on Wednesday, 02 December 2009

Qatar is 100 percent committed to its role in developing Europe's tallest mixed-use skyscraper in London, its central bank governor said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a media update on progress of the 310-metre office and residential Shard project, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Saoud Al-Thani said he was excited by the rate of construction and reiterated the state's confidence in London's economic future.

Sheikh Al-Thani said: "The State of Qatar is firmly behind these projects which reflect our belief that the United Kingdom continues to offer an attractive, stable and robust economic environment."

"We are confident that the Shard will become a landmark on the London skyline and a symbol of the close ties between Qatar and the United Kingdom," he added.

A spokesman for the London Bridge Quarter joint venture leading the project, said Dubai's property-related troubles had no bearing on Qatar's backing of The Shard, one of the state's largest-ever investments in Britain.

The London Bridge Quarter development surrounding the Shard tower has an estimated completion value of 2 billion pounds and is set to complete in summer 2012.

"The events unfolding in Dubai have absolutely no impact negative or otherwise on the development, which is proceeding with the full backing of the State of Qatar.

The entire project is fully funded and development and construction finance is in place," the spokesman said.

Much of Dubai's debt woes have been blamed on a real estate construction and investment boom, which has driven two flagship government companies close to defaulting on billions in bonds.

Dubai World plans to meet its main creditors next week to discuss restructuring of $26 billion of debts.

Irvine Sellar, chief executive of Sellar Property Group, Qatar's main partner in the Shard project, said the UK should be "extremely grateful" for Qatar's faith in London and its support of the regeneration of the London Bridge transport hub.

Sellar has already secured prelets for 192,000 square feet of office space from Transport for London and hotel operator Shangri-La, which has agreed to occupy around 174,000 square feet of space.

Some 400,000 square feet of office space remains unlet although official marketing is yet to begin, Sellar said.
Qatar has poured billions of dollars of its national wealth into London's property market, which has been a preferred international investment destination for Gulf-based states since the 1980s.

Last month, Qatari Diar, a unit of the Qatari Investment Authority, added the U.S. embassy in Mayfair's Grosvenor Square to its growing portfolio, which also includes the 960 million pounds Chelsea Barracks development site.
