The best place to view downtown Manhattan is the Observation Deck at the Empire State Building, you can have a good view from the Statue of Liberty, taking a ferry or from the Brooklyn Bridge. There's no a (high) public observation deck in Lower Manhatta, wait until they open 1 World Trade Center.

The crane is connected to the side that doesn`t taper. WTC 1 is NOT an octogonal pyramid.

Thanks for the info! It will be great to have an opportunity to view the downtown cluster from on high when WTC 1 is complete and it's observation deck is open, as although I've never been up there, the Empire State Building seems a bit far off for getting a good view of downtown. Is it known what level the observation deck of WTC 1 will be on?

Thanks Johnflint for the set of pictures!

A couple of pictures showed the glass looking good at one and wavy at the other side. It will be interesting how it will look like in the end.
