It's one of the 4 escape stairways. On the 3rd floor they move from the core of the building out to the corners. All of the WTC buildings will have stairs like this, so that people can exit directly out into the street. The stairwells are encased in concrete to prevent damage (several blocked stairways prevented evacuation of the upper floors of the Twin Towers leading to ~1,500 deaths). They also help shield the lobby from street level explosions, like the rest of the podium concrete panels.

In the twin towers, two of the three emergency stairs exited on to the plaza level, which was 1 floor above the street, so they have to go back around to the lobby escalators and then out through the lobby doors, adding extra time that surely cost people their lives.

i'm imagining all of the features this is going to get in films that are shot in NYC once it's complete. ESB will once again have a rival in that regard.

Given that this forum is ~99% male, you're welcome to the orgy. I'll stick with a beer myself.

Having been to London yesterday a taken some photos of The Shard i can see now that the photos didn't do it justice and it seemed so much bigger in the flesh.

Being that 1WTC is much bigger than The Shard it must seem huge up close. Hopefully i'll get to NYC one day to see for myself .

1WTC looks amazing with the cladding going on!!
