Wonderful pictures!
I wish the flag wasn't on the building, though...

I know what it is. I do live in America. I was born in America.

I just wish it wasn't there. Kind of stupid of me.

Mr. Know-It-All Math Boy, they are not octagons. They are octagonal polygons. Only an octagon is an octagon.

And the sides are not equidistant, they are of equal length.

You are the stickler for accuracy, so I just thought I'd keep you honest.

As 1 WTC passes 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza next week to become fourth tallest downtown / eleventh city-wide, it's remarkable to think that there are four buildings in the city from 1930-1932 that will still be 100 or more feet taller.

I don't really feel like giving you a lesson, Mr. Traynor, but elementary level math does come in handy sometimes.

octagon |ˈäktəˌgän; -gən|
noun
a plane figure with eight straight sides and eight angles.
• an object or building with a plan or cross section of this shape.

(straight out of New Oxford American Dictionary, 2nd Edition)

An octagon is the same thing as an "octagonal polygon". It is, quite literally, a polygon with eight sides, no matter what their lengths are. Only a regular octagon has eight equidistant sides.

Wrong

An octagon is an eight sided polygon with all sides of equal length and set at equal angles.

Anything else eight-sided is an regular or irregular octagonal polygon.

Look it up again... And this time not in a dictionary. Try one of your geometry books that are probably still unopened.

Traynor, what you're talking about is a regular octagon, but the word "octagon" by itself can refer to any eight-sided polygonal figure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octagon

http://www.mathopenref.com/octagon.html

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Octagon.html

the 72nd floor of 1 World Trade Center is to be built as a regular octagon, but nearly every other floor in the building will also be an octagon, just not a regular one, as the sides will not all be equal.

This diversion is absurd. Mods forgive me.

Could somebody please tell me why they're "octagons" to begin with?? It has to have some sort of symbolism, I assume.

Heck, almost everything about the new project does...

The cross-sections of most of the tower's floors are octagonal because the building itself has 8 sides. A popular (at least on this forum) symbolic interpretation of this fact is that 1 WTC represents a combination of the two 4-sided twin towers into one. And since 2 X 4 = 8, we get an octagon.

masonic symbolism, perhaps? after all, 9/11 was a false flag operation.
