The above pictures show what a concrete bunker the base is. More than anything else, this seems to be designed simply not to be easily knocked down.

It sure isn't going to have a very pretty lobby.

I wonder how SOM is doing with the new base treatment for this. Hope it still melds well with the overall structure. I was hoping the old proposal would push through which is now impossible due to that glass controversy.

BTW, nice pics of WTC1 in all american lighting scheme!

All these pictures are great and it is always sunny in NYC.
It really is the City of all seasons.
Its snowy and cold in winter and then it is scorching hot in the summer.
Cant wait to move over.
Greetings from Dublin Ireland.

I agree, walking inside 1WTC is going to feel like a scene from the 2004 film Der Untergang.

They can try and hide it all they want behind fancy glass from the outside, but when curious tourists start asking why they are greeted with a dark, claustrophobic lobby, the tourists get no other response than the base was made that way out of fear. There are 1,000,000 ways to design a lobby and it's obvious the devs weren't shooting for the stars here.

I think that render is off. It makes it look as if they have natural light coming in where we now know they can't because it is solid concrete walls. The actual product won't look as nice as that render, I don't believe.

Me too. Looks no different than a dozen other lobbies I've been in recently. I'd much rather work in a secure building than one that makes itself vulnerable for the sake of ego-driven aesthetics.

Who cares about the lobby? Think of the sweeping views the office floors/observation deck will have compared to the original towers.

Well isn't it time they started thinking about how to clad the outer part of the lobby, since their original plan didn't work?

I am aware that this is supposed to be completed in 2013
but does anyone know when it is supposed to be topped out? (sooner than 2013 I hope!)

^We seriously need a FAQ section here. The PA announced a while back they were going to top out (not counting the mast) by the end of this year. Even Zen was hopping a topping out ceremony on December 23th (same day the North Tower of the original complex topped out, back in 1970), but since weather conditions weren't in favor the past winter, I'll say it should occur by 1Q 2012.
