way off topic but this is total BS. Whatever ever happened it was so minor that very few people here felt it. That people are using this as an excuse to go home is a joke.

having said that, I actually could understand if some construction sites on skyscrapers shut down for the rest of the day.

did something happen with the scaffolding in the pictures above? It did look as though it fell or is twisted. When was that picture taken?

I'm downtown by battery park and we definitely felt the building sway here

Actually, now that I look closer there is nothing abnormal about the scaffolding - it is just the angle of ground level is different than what I am accustomed to.

Will there be fireproofing sprayed onto the crisscrossing red beams on the base?

Looking good. it's really getting quite high now!
as for the quake, 5.8 is NOT minor if you are close to where it happens. It was lucky it didn't happen right under a major city like NY, or else there would have been a LOT more damage.

Something of biblical proportions already happened today, 1WTC became a supertall!

Yes folks, NYC now has two supertalls. And many, very many more proposed or even approved. All New Yorker skyscraper fans should feel privileged for living in this era of such a huge NYC skyscraper boom.

Well, and since new steel was erected it is again time for my famous checklist.
1WTC is now 302 meters or 991 feet tall making it a supertall skyscraper. Now it needs only one foot more to pass the Houston Wells Fargo Plaza. It is currently the 9th tallest building in the US and the 2nd tallest building in NYC

Most likely that is preparation for the ceremonies of 9/11 which are coming up.

I don't think it is a supertall yet. There are two measures for supertall - one in meters and one in feet. Given that in the US we use feet and this tower is in the US I assume it would have to be 1,000 feet tall before qualifying as supertall - passing 300 meters doesn't count in a country that doesn't use meters.

Finally a good question! The base beams are already fireproofed with intumescent paint. Sheer metal column covers will encase the red steel.

Happy for the building have reached the mark of 300 meters before the attacks of 10 years. I am also happy that this earthquake did not reach our wonderful city, I was quite worried.
Even if a quake of large proportions hit the city, at least this building would still stand.

Exactly. A building like this, designed to withstand both earthquakes and tornadoes (and of course, terrorism). Of course, all to a certain extent, but this building is the "stronger" in town.
